"They made my ugly duckling yard into a beautiful swan. They worked hard getting out rocks and dead plants. They came up with a beautiful arrangement of perennials. They did everything with excellence. They put concrete under the border wall. They broke up an old concrete patio and repoured it correctly with good stones and rebar. It all looks so beautiful and was done with integrity. They were very polite."

"I contacted PG Excavating to cut out and grade a 15 x 12 area for a fire pit on my 4-acre property. The project also included a gravel base, a weed barrier, 1.5 tons of decorative rock, and framing with landscape timbers. The selected site was in a back corner of the property and a distance from the driveway. Sean contacted me weekly to assess the wetness of the property to minimize damage from heavy equipment. He did not pick a date and force it on me. He continually checked the property and proceeded when he felt the ground could best handle the activity. He made this decision as if it were his own home/lawn. The job was completed in one, long day. Through a strategic approach (with no short cuts), they minimized the number of trips across my yard and limited off-driveway equipment to a mini-excavator (no pick-up trucks and no dump truck!). Very professional from concept to completion. Highly recommend."

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

The condition and appearance of your yard can affect your home appraisal value. A well-maintained, attractive yard with curb appeal adds to a property’s value, while an overgrown, messy, poorly maintained yard can hurt your home’s appraisal. Even small cosmetic improvements to your yard, like adding mulch, trimming trees, and cleaning out plant beds, can help your appraisal value.

There are several reasons your grass may be dying that could be in or out of your control. The most common issues include poor drainage, under/overwatering, poor soil pH, low soil nutrients, low sunlight, or too much foot traffic.

It is for the purpose of protecting them from hail because you’ll be removing it soon after the threat is over. However, plastic or vinyl tarps aren’t recommended as a long-term way of protecting your plants from frost because they’ll trap too much moisture inside, which is actually not a good thing for your plants. But in the short term, it’s fine to use even an overturned garbage can to protect a plant from hail.

Most experts recommend a quarter-inch layer of compost for best results, and you will need about .77 cubic yards of material per 1,000 square feet. To measure how much compost to use, take the square footage of your yard and multiply it by .77, then divide that number by 1,000.

Finding a reputable greenhouse or nursery should start online, where you can read through customer reviews to gauge the quality of the plants sold and the customer experience. Look out for customers complaining about plants dying shortly after purchase, and try to choose a greenhouse known for hiring employees who are able to explain how to care for the plants you purchase. It’s also a good idea to head to a few greenhouses to see the selection they offer and make sure they carry the plants or trees you’re looking for.
