"Grants Tree Service did great job. I worked with Paul Dotson through Angie's List's messaging feature to schedule an quote. He showed up on time and after looking at the trees, he gave me a verbal quote to remove 1 tree and thin out 6 others. I asked when he could perform the work and he said his guys were in the area and could be out within the hour. I had him move forward. The guys came out, did the work, and cleaned everything up. Cory, the arborist, was great! He was very knowledgeable, even giving advice on things he noticed around our house. He also walked me through everything when they were still cleaning up so I didn't have to get caught in the impending rain. Overall A+!"

"Jorge and his team did an excellent job. They were on time, courteous and they did the job really fast for a fair price. They took down three very large oak trees and several small trees. I would recommend them to anyone who needs tree service."

"Working with Arborite Tree Care was simple and painless. In less than 24 hours they provided a certificate of liability insurance with our homeowners listed as the certificate holder. Arborite Tree Care team are true professionals they cut down 3 trees and removed the stumps working in less than a day. These trees were extremely close to my lanai and hedges, and they were able to easy circumnavigate both. If you are getting your trees removed getting a quote from Arborite Tree Care is must. You will not be disappointed."

"Ryan’s crew did an outstanding job removing the trees from my front yard. The trees were leaning towards my home. Ryan’s crew took extra precautions to ensure the trees fell away from the house. They very respectful of the property, and even went the extra mile and chipped the tops of the trees for me. Ryan Cunningham Services is a reliable and trustworthy company. The owner is a man of his word with a great work ethic and it shows in the job(s) he and his crew do."

"When I called for a quote, he came within a day. Being very busy, I was told it might even be 6 weeks. They called me last night and said they could do it this morning at 8. So that was only a week. They were prompt, courteous, knowledgeable and fast. The arborist also told me that the tree did not need cabling which saved me some money! We also discussed what I will do in the future. They cleaned up the yard upon completion. I will use them again!"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Any cutting of tree roots can hurt or kill a tree, which is why it's recommended you don’t do it unless the roots are damaging or invasive on a nearby structure like your home. You should never cut more than 15 percent of above-ground tree roots at one time. If you have any questions about cutting tree roots, contact your local arborist.

A few signs a tree may be dead is if the leaves are dead and there are no signs of new blooms. You can also perform a scratch test on some of the branches to check the condition of the cambium layer beneath the bark.

If it is green, it is still alive, but if several are dry, brittle, and brown, the tree may be dying or dead. Always consult an arborist before assuming your tree is dead because you may be able to save it.

If you want to take your tree-planting hobby beyond your outdoor space, here are a few great ways to do it:

  • Encourage your neighbors to participate in the Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA program, which has a four-step framework that helps communities grow and maintain their own tree cover.

  • Support businesses that plant trees.

  • Lobby your local government to plant more trees around your community.

  • Donate to a tree-planting charity.

Finding a reliable arborist starts with researching specialists in your area and checking their licensing and certifications. Use online resources like the Better Business Bureau (BBB) to conduct research on each company. Next, contact the arborist and ask the following questions to see whether they are the right fit for your project:

  • Do you handle or specialize in dealing with the issue I’m having?

  • Are you fully insured?

  • Do you have customer references I can call?

  • Do you have any third-party certifications?

  • What equipment and strategies do you plan to use?

The ideal depth of a tree notch depends on the tree, but it should usually be between 20% and 25% of the tree’s depth. However, if the tree is leaning towards the direction of the notch, it can be cut more shallowly—at as little as 10% of the depth. When the tree is leaning away from the direction it needs to be felled, you can cut deeper, closer to 30%.
