Black mold on wood is a very serious issue. Besides compromising the structural integrity of the wood, it poses significant health risks. Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly known as toxic black mold, produces mycotoxins that can lead to respiratory issues, allergies, skin irritations, and other health problems. If left untreated, it can spread rapidly and compromise the structural stability of the affected wooden structures. Immediate remediation and preventive measures are essential to mitigate the risks associated with black mold on wood.

The spread of wood rot results in a physical breakdown of the wood’s cellulose and lignin, causing it to become spongy or brittle. This can lead to structural damage. Water won’t damage the physical structure of the wood, while mold can eat away at the material and cause structural damage over a much longer timeframe. When further considering water damage versus mold versus wood rot, all three issues can create a musty or damp odor in the area. All three can also cause discoloration of the wood.

Mold can grow quickly in wet carpet: in as little as 12 to 24 hours. That’s why it is crucial to take action immediately if there’s any sign of water damage under your floor. Remove as much water as possible with a shop vac and towels, then use baking soda to help remove moisture deep in the fibers. Painting over mold is not an effective solution and can actually make the problem worse. Instead, it traps moisture, which allows mold to grow and spread beneath the surface. Mold must be completely removed before painting to ensure the problem doesn’t recur. If mold is painted over, it may eventually seep through the new layer of paint, causing discoloration and peeling.
