"Very pleased with the services performed. Everything was punctual, professional, and efficient from the inspection and estimate visit to the repair services. Workers were clean and careful around the property, and kept us informed of their progress. The work areas were picked up and cleaned after completion of the repairs. The new crown looks great and the we're happy to be using the fireplace again. All work included in the estimate was completed exactly as promised and we had no issues with anything needing to be redone or called back for completion. I'd highly recommend! Compared to another company we had provide an inspection and estimate, Moseley personnel were factual and informative in their assessment of the chimney condition and didn't use "scare tactics" and pressure. Moseley's pricing was the best as well."

"Excellent work from start to finish. My father was a mason, so I know great work when I see it. First, they brought in a tear-down team to remove the chimney down to the first-floor roof level of our two-story house. After which, they rebuilt the chimney to original height installing approximately 900 new bricks using a new Type N mortar. They installed a new 5" thick concrete crown with a 2" drip edge and an expansion joint. They replaced all accessible sections of fireplace clay flue tile extending 4" - 6" above the concrete crown. Installed new stainless steel chimney cap. Installed 2 sets of new step and counter flashing. Installed 2 sets of new ice water shields and shingles as needed. Cleaned and weather sealed chimney entirely upon completion. After the chimney rebuild was done, the Mason, Seth, and his crew cleaned the work site, to include the whole driveway. They are a very efficient and thorough team. I understand that they like to leave the customer's house and yard as clean or better than they find it."

"I have mixed feelings about this company. I picked Hatton because they had the best price and accepted credit cards. I was a bit skeptical of the price since it was so much lower than everyone else I called, but that is the main reason I picked them. I got my quote over the phone and followed up with an email to confirm the price, but I never received a response from the email (this is why 4 stars for customer service). I was happy with the appointment scheduling, I was able to get a convenient time for me the same week I called. Other companies were scheduling out a couple of weeks. However, after their visit, I wished I had hired a certified chimney sweep instead of trying to save money. I can't say they didn't know what they were doing, but I can't say they did. My "feeling" is that a couple of guys bought a shop vac and a wire brush tool and went into business.Perhaps this is how everyone does it though because I have only had my fireplace cleaned one other time by one of the other companies and it was a long time ago. I do remember my feeling at that time is that the other company was very honest and professional. I didn't get the same warm and fuzzy from Hatton. I would have scheduled the original company again, but it took several weeks to get an appointment (worth the wait) and the price was about $50 higher (you get what you pay for?), but mainly because they didn't take credit cards (I like to earn points whenever I can). Finally, I felt the owner, Dan, and his assistant could have been a bit more friendly/personable/verbal. There was very little said which made it a bit awkward. The assistant didn't say one word which was kinda creepy. Dan did give an honest recommendation on how often we should have the fireplace cleaned. He said with our occasional use we wouldn't need it annually. I appreciated that input. All in all, if you're looking for an inexpensive chimney sweep and don't care about certifications, go for it. The fast, cheap service is something many people would appreciate."

"Were honest about determining our chimneys were clean and did not need swept ... Installed our chimney caps as requested and did some extra repair in the chimney tops for cash. Inspected both fireplaces and quoted some prices for repairing both, with most being new mortar or caulking on some deteriorated brick joints."

"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. Recommended and installed a stainless liner and cap for the furnace flue and a new damper on the fireplace flue. Their price was better than previous quotes and even set up a partial payment plan. I am very pleased with the work they did."

Small jobs welcome

"Very timely on response to request for service and show times. Very reasonably priced. Only thing I would recommend would be to have a written estimate of services and cost so as not to be confused on project needed. I needed shower floor tile "cleaned and re-grouted" where needed and Robert understood "clean tile and grout". At no extra charge to me he went and got grout and re-grouted where needed. Took them extra time and money but did not charge me more than estimate! Would hire again for other cleaning projects which they said they do."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Yes, a chimney cap is an excellent idea for several reasons. It prevents debris, rain, or snow from entering your chimney, which can cause moisture damage or blockages. A cap with a mesh screen also keeps animals like birds, squirrels, and bats from nesting in your chimney—or worse, getting into your abode. Additionally, chimney caps help prevent downdrafts, which can push smoke and harmful gases back into your home. Lastly, by installing a chimney cap, you will improve safety and enhance the overall efficiency of your fireplace.

Yes, you should seal and cap an unused chimney to protect it from damage. Sealing the structure helps prevent moisture damage, which can lead to issues like cracks, spalling, efflorescence, and damaged mortar joints. Capping the chimney is also crucial to prevent blockages, damage from invasive critters, and downdrafts, while still allowing for proper air ventilation to manage moisture. For the best results, consult a chimney professional to select the right type of chimney or flue cap for your home. It's also wise to continue with annual chimney inspections to maintain the structure's integrity.

To build a patio with a built-in fire pit, expect to pay an average of $6,750. The cost to build a patio alone is an average of $3,500. Although the cost of construction is higher, the patio and fire pit combination offers a better resale value than a patio alone or a patio with a fire pit add-on.

Gas fireplace inserts are considered the most efficient because they convert more of the fuel source—gas—into heat. They offer excellent heat output per the amount of fuel they use. While electric fireplace inserts are praised for their efficiency, keep in mind that they don’t offer as strong a heat output but may still be a great choice if you want an efficient option.

The most common sign of a carbon monoxide leak is the visible black soot marks on the walls near your wood stove. An excess accumulation of smoke in other rooms of your home could also indicate that your wood burning stove is leaking carbon monoxide. If you notice either of these signs or are still unsure, it’s best to leave the premises and contact your fire department to check your home’s levels.
