"We just had Jayson Wright, Service Manager, to our residence to do an inspection of our egress window and a potential water issue on one of the basement walls. Jayson did an excellent job and explained everything that we were concerned about. I fully recommend Jayson Wright and Groundworks for any and all basement issues involving waterproofing."

"We had a problem with our bathtub and sinks not draining in our house that has weird, old plumbing. It was taken care of very quickly and we couldn’t be happier with the service. We have had their help with many different fixes now from plumbing to drywall to door replacement and every time it has been fixed up perfectly and the guys have been absolute pleasure to work with. Highly recommend!!"

"Mr. Woody responded to my call quickly, came to the house for the estimate when promised, returned a call with the estimate when promised and did the work promptly on the promised date. He is a very quiet and serious gentleman. I would definitely recommend him and use him again when necessary. He also had good suggestions for other providers in related areas."

"James worked wonders with our quirky older house. He is imaginative and meticulous in his work. The wood work on the cased opening between the living room and den is beautiful. We were out of the country when James renovated our kitchen and bathrooms, and we returned to find wonderful changes. Any "surprises" that cropped up during the renovations were quickly and expertly dealt with by James. He always shows up on time when scheduled and ready to work -- all day. James is a good steward of the monies we budgeted for our projects and was as concerned about costs as we were. We quickly felt he was almost a member of our family. We would not hesitate to contact James again for future renovations. In fact, he is scheduled to return in May for another project.

Egress Windows questions, answered by experts

Finding a reputable contractor for an egress window installation involves researching and vetting potential candidates. Start by searching for local professionals, reading customer reviews, and checking their websites for a portfolio of their work.

Once you have a shortlist, ask the following questions to ensure they are qualified:

• Are you licensed and insured?

• What experience do you have installing egress windows?

• Can you provide references from previous customers?

• Do you perform the work yourself or use subcontractors?

• What is the estimated project timeline and your current schedule?

• How do you handle payment?

The cost to install a bow window can range from $1,500 to $15,000, with a national average of $3,900. The total price includes materials, which can cost between $1,200 and over $14,000, and labor, which typically adds $300 to $1,900. Several factors influence the final cost, including the window's size and frame material. For example, vinyl frames are the most budget-friendly option, while wood frames are more expensive. Custom features or energy-efficient upgrades will also increase the price. For comparison, a bay window installation typically costs between $1,000 and $7,000.

Expect excavation below grade, creating a well for access, weatherproofing, and thorough inspections during setup.

DIY is possible for experienced individuals. Professional installation ensures compliance with building codes and proper sealing.

Most modern egress windows installed in basements open outward into a window well, although some older homes have in-swing windows. Egress windows, like casement windows used in other parts of the home, such as bedrooms and bathrooms, may open inward, and these windows are often larger than outward-opening windows.
