"Ani and his brother were timely, communicative and sent updates when each piece of work was done. The old pool house old building had issues that were revealed as work progressed, and Ani gave me quotes for what each repair would cost. He also helped me pick tile, explain why a floor covering of tile would make more sense than wood in the house. He painted, replaced the roof, created a vent, and created a shutoff switch for the pipe so that a leak might not happen in the future. Above all, the project was completed on time within his estimates. In addition, he was very good to work with and together the project came together very well. He was clear and direct, which is how I like working with someone. I would recommend A&K construction and will definitely hire them again for future projects."

"She wanted me to come to the office in Gansevoort to give me more information but she didn’t share it in person at home or send it to me by email like the other companies I contacted did.  She gave multiple phone calls to ask why I wasn’t going, which I found a little intrusive.  I called her the Saturday to tell her I couldn’t make it because I work during the week and Gansevoort is about a forty-minute ride.  She wanted to me design ideas but I wasn’t interested in that, I just felt it was pressure and she wouldn’t give me an estimate via email.  I just wanted a basic tiling done, so I am not sure why she couldn’t give me a basic estimate like the other ones did.  She is a pleasant woman but I like the convenience of being able to work in my house or by email because I work and I don’t have a lot of time to run around looking at things for estimates.  She didn’t end up giving me a quote at all."

"As someone building a second home in Vt., everything needed to be done from a 235 mile distance. This can feel a little scary. My experience w/ Joe was Outstanding!!! Joe approaches all his tasks whether it be contract work or time & material work w/ the same set of ethics. Get it done in a timely fashion, be fair, communicate clearly, take regular pics, send via text for approval or comment, & offer advice through his experience as a seasoned builder. If you are lucky enough to work w/ Joe, enjoy the experience, your in good hands. Bill Giglio from Ct."

Backsplash Installation questions, answered by experts

Your floors should be completely level for tile, otherwise you risk damaging the tiles in the future. When there are even small gaps or hills in the subfloor beneath the tile, this puts more pressure on the tile when you walk around on the floor. With repeated traffic, the tiles are at risk of cracking, and you’ll have to deal with tile repairs sooner than if the floor was completely level.

It’s important to leave a gap in the corner when tiling to allow room for tile expansion. Leaving between one eighth of an inch to one tenth of an inch is enough space.

On average, tiling a shower costs between $1,800 and $5,000, with most people paying around $2,700. The price of this project depends on multiple factors, including the kind of tile you choose, the size of your shower, and labor rates in your area. If you decide to tile your own shower (instead of hiring a professional), it’ll likely cost $800 to $1,400.

Penny tile should be sealed to protect the grout from moisture and keep stains from damaging the look of the tile. If penny tile is in a humid or high-traffic area, like a bathroom, kitchen, or entryway, it needs sealant. Any type of tile and grout is best maintained with a sealant reapplied by a pro every one to two years.

Generally speaking, it is better to cut tile wet when using a fast-moving wet saw to reduce dust and chipping. However, tile can be cut dry when using just about any cutting tool. Dry cutting will result in a bigger mess and may increase the risk of chipping or cracking, but if you’re just making small cuts, dry cutting is a safe and viable option. Cutting dry also means you can apply tile grout sooner, so it’s better for rushed projects.
