"Tim and Jake Hillman of Diggs Build Technologies are the right guys to fix properly your home-foundation problems. They assessed the issues with my leaking and bowing basement wall, and patiently explained why replacing it was the right solution (and merely propping it up wasn't). They carried out the work in early summer 2025, along with an exterior sump pump, and sorted out problems related to rotten beams they encountered along the way. I highly suggest you remain on site on their working days so you can learn about and consult on the work, which is interesting in itself. Naturally such great guys are in high demand, but they're worth the wait and expense."

"Keegan and company did a beautiful job with the wall: we love it and our neighbors compliment his work on a daily basis. Estimate was casual, but he charged the amount he quoted even though the work took longer than anticipated."

Small jobs welcome

"1 day ago We are very pleased with the drywall repair and painting that Matt did for us. He painted the ceiling and walls over the stairwell along with ceiling and drywall repairs/painting. He was very considerate, asked us when necessary to confirm our wished and he communicated any concerns he had. He was patient with my indecisions at times. He improved on our wishes and still charged us a reasonable price BELOW his estimate. As a homeowners we couldn't be more pleased,"

"They worked very hard and the results were beautiful. They have a lot of talent. The plaster ceiling, which is difficult to work with because it is 12' high, and the walls in that same room were in awful shape and required gallons and gallons of plaster. The tin ceiling needed special care to avoid scratching when scraping off the old paint, and the plaster crown moldings around the ceilings were also difficult because they had curvy edges. Anton and crew did a wonderful job. I would hire them again."

Customers say: Quick response

"As usual with Mike and his crew, the job went great. It was a fair price and Mike supplied the inspiration for great retaining walls. The job took only one day because his crew worked their tails off. The end result is an 100% improved back yard. Our hom"

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its material, installation quality, maintenance, and local climate, with an average range of 20 to 100 years. Retaining walls made from durable materials like concrete, stone, and brick generally last a minimum of 50 years. Concrete walls typically last between 50 and 100 years, while brick can last for over a century in ideal conditions. Timber retaining walls can last from 20 to 40 years, depending on the wood quality, and pressure-treated wood walls average around 30 years. It is important to note that a retaining wall can fail prematurely if it was poorly constructed, for example, with inefficient footings or without necessary rebar reinforcements.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Rebar is a steel support that goes inside concrete to prevent structural damage over time. Concrete is susceptible to impact, weight, and tension. By inserting rebar into the concrete during the installation, you can help extend its lifespan and avoid hazardous situations where the foundation of your home gives way to tensile forces.
