"Alex responded promptly to my request for an estimate and was able to provide me with one immediately after evaluating the site and job we wanted done. I thought the price was fair and in line with the other estimates, his responsiveness was top notch and he was almost immediately available. Once we agreed on hiring him, he and his team were able to start within the same week. We had an excellent experience throughout the process and he was able to quickly and fairly address any changes to the original plans. The guys were always right on time, incredibly efficient, and left the work area very clean every day after they were done. We have spent more time the last two weeks on our back patio than we have on our deck in any given year. He gave us an estimate on a Tuesday, we hired him the following Monday, they started on Saturday, and finished on Wednesday. I wish I had more work for them to do, and would certainly recommend Alex Masonry."

"Keegan and his assistants are true artists. My project was complicated and took a few months to complete. The final wall system looks dry laid but is back mortared and incorporated drainage and reinforced concrete. Throughout the process, Keegan worked collaberatively with me to ensure the project's aesthetics and function fit both my needs and suited the demands of my location. The final project is stunning. Keegan worked consistently with great attention to detail, was relaxed and warm around my dog and cat who sometimes showed interest in the project, and stayed in communication with me throughout. He is a very knowledgeable and skilled mason."

Customers say: Quick response

"Dan is personable, friendly and professional. He came on time. When he said he would, and apologized for having to reschedule for 2 days later due to the weather, which of course was not his fault! He did a great job repairing my chimney and cleaned up after himself. The chimney looks great. I will definitely call him the next time I need work done. He also does power washing! I highly recommend Clark Masonry!"

"We didn't get the work done to refinish our basement because we had to prioritize two other items before we can do the basement.  When we are able to do the basement work we would absolutely use Adirondack Basement Systems.

"They were very creative by making suggestions.  For example, the shoe rack was supposed to just fit over the door with brackets, but because of years of painting, the doors did not close properly.  They came up with the idea to cut the bracket and drill holes to secure the shoe rack more securely.  Also, they very friendly, and professional.

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Modern brick houses are really stick-built homes with a brick facade for aesthetic purposes only, so most have framing. With genuine brick construction, most homeowners install furring strips over the interior of the brick and then install drywall over those strips to cover the brick wall, so they don’t have traditional framing.

For most brick cleaning jobs, including fireplace bricks, use a masonry sponge and a gentle cleaner. A simple solution of equal parts water and vinegar, or a few drops of dish soap in a bowl of water, can effectively remove grime. For tougher stains, you can use a dedicated masonry or fireplace cleaner. It is crucial to wet the bricks thoroughly with water before applying any cleaning solution to prevent the brick from absorbing it, and to rinse the surface completely afterward. Harsher cleaners containing bleach or ammonia should only be used as a last resort, and they should never be mixed together.

Some older brick material is extremely hard, making it tough to create a hole. Rather than using a typical wood drill bit, always use a masonry drill bit when drilling into brick. For extremely hard brick, using a power drill with a hammer function may give you better results. The drill bit will heat up as it goes into the extremely hard brick, so you may need to stop after a few minutes and allow the bit to cool before starting to drill again.

When it comes to how to paint a brick chimney, consider that standard paint can seal in moisture and cause serious chimney problems. Instead, use a vapor-permeable sealant. You’ll first scrub and sand the chimney; then, you can patch any gaps with caulk and apply the sealant. We recommend hiring a pro for this job since it entails working on the roof, which comes with a lot of necessary safety precautions.

Masonry is an umbrella term that involves adhering individual building materials together using an adhesive, so many different things are considered masonry. These include constructing stone or brick walls or facades, installing stucco siding, installing backsplashes or tile floors, and even installing glass block windows, in some cases. Masonry materials include natural stone, clay bricks, concrete bricks, glass blocks, and tiles.
