"We needed to replace an old fence with a new PVC fence. After getting a few other estimates, we choose All Island Fence and Railings not only for the price but also because the sales associate, Bob, gave us a lot of confidence with information about the products and details about the work, and the warranties. Bob was informative and real professional. On the day of the job the installers were hard working, courteous, and careful. They double checked the property lines as needed. With all the windstorms we get I was particularly concern with the posts being well reinforced with concrete. I am confident this one is well done. The entire job was done perfectly, as was the removal of the old fence and the clean up. It was a great overall experience and I highly recommend All Island Fence and Railings."

How long a wood fence lasts depends on the type of wood and its style. The design of a shadow box fence makes it more durable than other fence types because the alternating pickets disperse the weight across the rails. As a result, you won’t have to worry as much about sagging or failing pickets. However, remember that the hollow design of a shadow box fence makes it more difficult to apply the sealer, which is crucial to extending its life.

There are different types of pet fencing available to keep your furry family member safe:

  • Chain link fencing is an affordable but not visually appealing option.

  • Vinyl panel fencing is less easily damaged than wood. 

  • Wood fencing is customizable but requires regular maintenance. 

  • Metal iron fencing provides a sleek look but doesn’t block your pet’s view. 

  • Electric fencing eliminates the need for a traditional fence, but it could be painful to your pet. 

  • Picket fencing adds to your curb appeal but won’t contain most pets. 

  • Brick or stone fencing stops pets from digging out of the yard but costs more.

You can use pressure-treated wood for a horizontal fence, but you’ll need to purchase a thicker and higher-quality variety to ensure it doesn’t sag or warp after you install it. Use #2 pine grade lumber and boards and thicker dimensional lumber, such as a two-by-six. You’ll also need to use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized fasteners, as the chemicals in the treated lumber will cause regular galvanized fasteners to rust. 

Planting greenery on a fence can help achieve more privacy, whether it’s shrubs along a picket or chain link fence or rolls of faux greenery to help create a solid-colored backdrop beyond the fence line. You can also try adding more lattice or paneling across a fence so that there are fewer places where passing eyeballs can see in.

Ideally, when you replace a fence post, you should also replace the concrete footing. The concrete bonds to your new post, creating a secure base. If you install a new post into old concrete, it won’t be as sturdy.

That said, it is possible. Sometimes the post will lift right out of the concrete. If not, you can use a high-lift car jack to try and lift the pole out of the footing. Put the new post into the same hole and backfill it with fast-setting concrete. Keep in mind, this won’t work well for metal posts.
