"Affordable Heating and Cooling did an amazing job installing my new split system on New Years Eve!! Dave the owner, was in constant communication with me from start to finish and was meticulous with all aspects of the project. They were very neat and cleaned everything back to the way it looked before the project began. A pleasure to work with and he even gave me a bunch of free advise about other aspects of my nearly 100 year old heating system. "They came out and gave an estimate for a new boiler and we contracted with them for the replacement. The technicians seemed very knowledgeable and thorough. We had a few issues after the installation with air getting in the line and blocking the flow of hot water. However, Our installation came with a 1 year service contract and they returned to remedy the problem promptly and professionally. Bell stands behind their work. We would recommend Bell and will use them in the future."

"These guys, Dave and Zach are very honest guys. They came to my house to check out what needed to be done and went over the whole thing with me. They carefully dug a trench/hole in my yard and repair a section of pipe that was damaged and leaking sewer into my yard. They came the next day with their equipment and had it fixed and cleaned up by sun down. I will call them again if I need any more work."

You should know the main components of an air conditioner: the condenser coils, evaporator coils, drip pan, AC filter, ducts, and refrigerant. You may never need an AC recharge if there are no leaks. However, if your AC unit has a leak that cannot be patched appropriately, you’ll need an AC recharge every time the freon level drops low enough that it disrupts your system—this could be once every two to three years. It all depends on the size and frequency of the leak.

It’s not customary to tip HVAC technicians, and most professionals won’t expect it. However, it’s a nice way of showing your appreciation for the work they do, especially if they come out in inclement weather or on a weekend or holiday to fix an emergency issue if your heat or AC goes out in extreme temperatures. A good tip would be between 10% to 20% of the total bill, depending on how above and beyond the tech goes for your repair and on the total cost of your HVAC repair or service. For something like a routine tune-up or scheduled maintenance, tips aren’t expected.

Here’s how AC professionals will clean your AC coils:

  1. Unplug the AC unit or turn off the breaker to the unit in your circuit breaker box.

  2. Remove the faceplate.

  3. Spray a vacuum hose attachment or compressed air can to remove debris, dust, dirt, and grime.

  4. Use a soft-bristled fin comb to remove stubborn caked-on debris.

  5. Use the vacuum hose to suck up any extra debris.

  6. Take a coil-safe cleaning solution and spray it onto the coils. Try to choose a no-rinse solution.

  7. Let the solution sit for at least 15 minutes.

  8. Gently wipe away loosened grime and debris with a microfiber cloth.

  9. Reattach the faceplate, plug in your AC system, or turn the breaker back on.

While both have advantages, a split system is generally cheaper than a ducted one. Because they are less invasive to install, the labor costs are lower, and they can be more energy efficient. But, a ducted system might be worth the investment if you run it more frequently.
