"Ken came to do an estimate on a ceiling repair from a pipe leak. He had the equipment with him, and did the repair on the spot. The ceiling looks great, and he was very neat-no mess at the end. I would definitely hire him again when we need drywall work. Very personable, and my dog liked him, too!"

"Arliss building tore down and built a new retaining wall and stairs and fully met all our expectations. It looks beautiful! Sean and his team (Dylan and Randy) are professional and very customer focused. Sean solicited my feedback throughout the project and was very flexible in accommodating changes I requested. The job was completed per schedule and budget. I would definitely hire Arliss Building for future projects."

"We have a brick chimney at our recently bought house that needed a chimney inspection. The previous owners put on a new roof and we were concerned about leaking. Vinny was very professional and checked everything thoroughly. He said all looked good and he would checked it again on the spring. I highly suggest him! Quick response time, courteous and very professional."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

Generally, a railroad tie retaining wall consisting of a single line of ties should be between 3 and 4 feet tall—and the height often tops out at around 6 feet. You can go taller, but you may need additional footings and reinforcements, including a second layer of railroad ties to support the added weight of the soil it’s holding back.

While vinyl is the least costly material for building a retaining wall, the most cost-effective method is to use wood or concrete blocks for a DIY retaining wall under 2 feet tall. Wood is inexpensive but lasts 20 years or more with care. Concrete can cost a little more but is stronger and will last longer with less maintenance.

The lifespan of a retaining wall varies based on its material, installation quality, maintenance, and local climate, with an average range of 20 to 100 years. Retaining walls made from durable materials like concrete, stone, and brick generally last a minimum of 50 years. Concrete walls typically last between 50 and 100 years, while brick can last for over a century in ideal conditions. Timber retaining walls can last from 20 to 40 years, depending on the wood quality, and pressure-treated wood walls average around 30 years. It is important to note that a retaining wall can fail prematurely if it was poorly constructed, for example, with inefficient footings or without necessary rebar reinforcements.
