"They were very professional and through. They had to install the gas fireplace in a 1940 fireplace with many uneven stones. They took the time to make sure it fit correctly and looked right. I highly recommend them for fireplace upgrades."

"When we discovered that the top of our chimney needed repairs, and that the whole chimney needed to be a foot higher to meet code, we looked for a chimney design that would look good, and a person to accomplish this. When Anthony from Four Winds Masonry and Chimney came to meet us, he impressed us by his knowledge and experience of chimneys and his attention to our thoughts and concerns. He proposed a lift rather than scaffolding that could scar our new roof and offered to bring samples of bricks that most closely matched out existing chimney. He also seemed delighted to have an artistic challenge. The work took 4 days, as he said, and we are thrilled with the results which add to the look of the house. Anthony and his helper Kyle were a pleasure to know and to have working around the house, did an excellent job and left the site perfectly clean. Wolf & Elizabeth S."

"We were looking for a contractor that could stabilize our side porches (bi-level) and enclose it with the largest windows possible for the space. We had sided the house years ago and covered some of the known potential structural ills of the side porch with aluminum coil. So we knew, an estimate was only going to be an best guess until they tore into the project. In the end...we ended up paying roughly 17% more than the original contract amount. However, this was almost expected or anticipated. I was most pleased with the fact that they did not simply try to cover up these challenges just to finish the job! The primary worker on this project "Lou" was excellent and very meticulous with his work. He was thorough and a wonderful craftsman! While the project was somewhat interrupted by the COVID-19 issues with our window manufacturer, the end result was most pleasing. We had originally projected keeping the interior in tact, but during deconstruction, we found the wainscot needed replacement as well. While I would have preferred to have Lou finish the interior, I ended up completing the interior myself due to cost and income issues on my part. While I was working to finish the interior, we visited by a rainstorm and there was a minor leak over one of the new windows. I wrote to Mark Genovese about this challenge and Lou was here the very next day to add some sealant to the coil over the windows, VERY Responsive! We have had no leaks since. I would highly recommend Genovese Home Improvement as a trusted contractor. Mark Genovese was professional and I would feel completely comfortable hiring his company in the future for any of my home improvement needs. We had a great experience with this company."

"The workers and office staff were easy to talk to, well informed, courteous , and efficient. They performed a thorough inspection. Recommended and installed a stainless liner and cap for the furnace flue and a new damper on the fireplace flue. Their price was better than previous quotes and even set up a partial payment plan. I am very pleased with the work they did."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Most homeowners put a layer of compact sand or gravel at the bottom of their firepit, but you can also choose more decorative options like fire-resistant paving stones, bricks, or fire pit glass. Dirt by itself can even work, but other materials do a better job of spreading the heat around.

Yes, pellet stoves can serve as a primary heating source in colder climates, provided they are properly sized for the space and maintained regularly. They are capable of generating sufficient heat to keep homes comfortable during winter months. However, in regions with extremely low temperatures, you may need supplemental heating to ensure consistent warmth, especially during prolonged cold spells.

Fireplaces can theoretically help you save on heating bills if you lower the temperature throughout the rest of your home and heat only a single room that you occupy using the fireplace. However, in most cases, homeowners won’t save any money on heating bills. Gas and electric fireplace inserts could actually lead to a spike in your respective energy bills if you use them frequently, and if you don’t keep up with chimney maintenance and repairs, your traditional masonry fireplace could actually be a source of heat loss in the winter.

You should never block both the top and bottom of your chimney. Proper airflow is essential because the temperature inside the chimney will still fluctuate as your house warms and cools. Moisture can build up without ventilation, leading to dampness in your walls over time. Blocking the top prevents debris and animals from entering, but the chimney still needs air circulation to avoid condensation issues. Allowing the chimney to breathe maintains the health of your home and prevents long-term damage.

You can close up a chimney instead of demolishing it. Homeowners often go this route because the cost of removing a chimney, especially a structurally important chimney, can be expensive.

Properly closing up a chimney involves closing and sealing the damper, installing a chimney cap damper, and sealing the fireplace opening with a door or bricks. The cost to seal and cap a chimney is around $500 to $650—significantly less than the average chimney removal cost.
