"Tom was professional, on-time, respectful of my home and pets. He had a challenging job, we asked him to come in to fix a disastrous tile job done by another "contractor" and he did phenomenal work. We plan on doing a big addition next year, any and all tile work will be done by Custom Tile Solutions, LLC."

"We are very pleased with the quality of work performed by Custom Tile Solutions. Tom arrived on time to provide us with an estimate and listened attentively to our ideas, asked all the right questions and offered suggestions for the work we were looking to have done. The demolition phase went smoothly and Tom worked carefully to minimize noise and dust. The project included bathroom floor tile, custom shower basin with seat and shower wall tiles. All work was done to exacting standards and the result was outstanding. Tom completed the job within the time frame he quoted and departed the work site taking all leftover materials with him. We cannot say enough about the entire experience with Tom and we highly recommend his company."

"Robert is an exceptional craftsman. His skill shows with a perfect layout. We used big 24 by 36 inch tiles and his recommendation for the layout turned out perfect. About his service he was the first contractor to actually call out the five I contacted prior. He came out gave me a reasonable quote and took on the project the following Monday. The results are fabulous. We have already discussed him doing our bathroom next!"

Small jobs welcome

"Tom arrived a little early for both appointments. 1st one was to check out the job, needed materials, etc. 2nd one was to do the repair. Unfortunately, the sheetrock under the tiles had gotten wet & deteriorated so that he couldn't complete the job without having to completely rebuild the structure. Gave me an excellent quote for tearout and replacement (tiles extra). Would have gone with him but my landlord brought in her tile man and gave him the job. Tom was personable, professional and quoted very reasonable prices. Have him do your work. You won't be disappointed."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

Yes. You can tile over tile if the old tile is in good shape, but this will also create a thicker floor. As a result, you may have to remove and readjust baseboards and other room trimmings and potentially even raise door heights to work with the higher floors. In most projects, it’s best to remove the old tile before installing a new tile floor.

To ensure an even and unbending surface to lay tiles on, you’ll typically need to put a subfloor under a tile floor. Fiber cement backboards are the most common choice, but using plywood is also possible. Don’t neglect this step, or you could risk water damage and grout or tiles prematurely cracking or crumbling, especially in an area with high foot traffic.

The easiest tile size to install is large tiles, and they’re easier to install than small tiles—the job is faster and simpler when there’s less placing, adhering, and grouting to do. However, when tiles get really big, they’re more difficult to handle, cut, and fit. Standard floor tile sizes are 12-by-12 inches, 18-by-18 inches, and 12-by-24 inches.

The best trowel for penny tile is a 3/16-inch-by-5/32-inch V-notch trowel. Because of the small size of the penny tile, you want a trowel with small notches that can lay a thin layer of mortar on the surface you’re tiling. If the notches are too wide, you risk applying too thick of a layer of mortar, and it can squeeze out between the penny tiles.

When cleaning porcelain tiles, avoid products that contain ammonia, bleach, and other harsh chemicals. Acid-based cleansers can damage the tile, though you can clean them with a diluted mixture of one-quarter cup white vinegar mixed with one gallon of hot water. It is important always to use a soft-bristled brush or sponge, since hard bristles and steel wool can scratch the tile.
