They committed to the project immediately and were here each consecutive day that weather allowed until the project was finished, in an unbelievable four days of grueling heat! We will absolutely reach out to them again for future projects."

Kevin Dulio has been involved in the landscape industry for over 20 years. He was interested in horticulture in high school and decided to make it his career. While studying horticulture at Delaware Valley College, he worked at two garden centers to increase his knowledge of plant material. After graduating in 2000 with a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture & Environmental Design, he managed a garden center in Sussex County, New Jersey. After a few years, he then became a branch manager for a landscape management firm in Warren County, New Jersey. In 2006, Kevin decided it was time to take his years of knowledge and experience in landscape management and start Native Fields Landscaping, LLC. Since his background was in landscape design, he decided to focus his business design/build and lawn maintenance. As the housing market took a downward turn, he regrouped and focused on lawn maintenance in order to control the rising costs of running a business. After six years being in business, Native Fields Landscaping, LLC is now specializing in the maintenance and snow/ice management of HOA (Home Owner Associations) in Morris, Warren, Sussex and Passaic Counties New Jersey for over 2,500 townhome units.

"High marks for following through and meeting their commitment and doing great work. I had an Almstead arborist review the property and provide recommendations on some dead limbs and trees. We came to an agreement. When the crew came, the arborist wasn't there (later found out she'd left and moved north). As far as I could tell, the crew didn't have the instructions we'd agreed on and they did some, not all of the work. What followed was back and forth, but after a few months they sent out the crew to remedy the missing work. They did a great job and I was very glad. I appreciate the office staying on it and making it right. I've used them for 24 years and happily look forward to continuing to use them. It's a lot to trust your trees to someone!"

"I was very pleased with the quality of the work. They arrived on time and reviewed the scope of the work I requested. The spruce and the sycamores were located in tight spaces. Their experience shown through as they tackled the job skillfully. They cleaned up both job sites promptly and thoroughly. I would definitely use them again."

Award winning. Bill Logan founded Urban Arborists to care for trees and shrubs where they matter most: in cities and suburbs, where they are often people's chief link to the natural world. Throughout the tri-state area, from backyard gardens in Bed-Stuy, to Manhattan townhouses, to cathedral and museum grounds, to New York City streets, to Westchester homes and estates, Urban Arborists brings the highest standards of knowledge, attention and care to the woody plants that transform lots into landscapes, yards into gardens, streets into groves. When people ask us what we do, we say, "We do everything and anything for trees and shrubs. We plant them, we prune them, we treat and fertilize them, we design with them, we teach about them, we advise on their health and well-being, we assess the reasons for their failure, and when it is necessary, we safely remove them." We insist on this broad approach for two reasons: First, it means that we know and understand - not only from education but from first-hand experience - the whole life cycle of the plants for which we care. Second, it means that our work is varied and engaging. Like good farmers, we follow tasks from season to season and from landscape to landscape. Because we treat gardens as living beings, they pay us back with work that keeps our interest and stimulates our continual learning. We look with our customers at the whole fabric of their gardens, their landscapes, their streets. We see where the light and the wind come from. We assess what companion plants may help or hurt a tree or shrub's resistance to antagonists. We look at the results of past care, of new construction, of any and all changes in the local landscape. We test the soils both on the spot and in the lab. We go over each tree or shrub from root to crown to see what is living with it and what may be feeding on it. When a crew from Urban Arborists is pruning neglected trees, they do not simply follow a job sheet. They aim to make the trees as safe, as healthy and as beautiful as they can possibly be. As one client wrote, "My wife and I work at home. We tried to ignore the pruning, but in the end we stopped even pretending to work while we watched your men. It was like a ballet or a circus, only in the end it brought us these beautiful trees." Additional e-mails - [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]. Award winning. "Stay away from them ! They came to trim two trees. Then they left to buy some supplies, then came back and decided to rearrange their setup, then started talking to the neighbors, and after 2 hours of this non-sens, they left without talking to me. The job was supposed to last for a couple of days. They charged me for $5k and never did the job !!! I left several messages, sent emails, they never contacted me back. They have a terrible job ethic, and awful customer service. Now I have to take legal action against them to recover my $5k. So, again, stay away from them !"

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

A yard of crushed concrete costs between $20 and $50. A single-car driveway will need 1.5 to 2.5 yards of crushed concrete, putting your material costs between $30 and $125, which is much less than you’ll pay for most driveway paving methods. Your total could vary based on the thickness you’re going for, and, of course, total prices will increase with added square footage for driveways that fit multiple cars.

Artificial turf usually requires some sort of base. If you’re installing the grass over soil, you’ll want to add a weed barrier (weeds can damage your fake grass) and an artificial grass sub-base . Typically, this is a mixture of gravel and sand, like crushed miscellaneous base (CMB) or decomposed granite. If you're placing turf over concrete, you can skip the sub base and use a padded underlayment.

You shouldn’t put topsoil over new grass seed. Even though it may seem like this would increase soil contact and help the seeds grow, adding more soil overtop of planted grass seed will only make it harder for water and oxygen to reach the grass seeds. If you want to protect the grass seeds, consider adding a thin layer of organic matter, such as straw or hay.

The cheapest landscape rock is gravel, pebbles, or decomposed granite. These small rocks are great for affordable driveways and walkways. If you’re looking for larger rocks as a building material, you can get fieldstone affordably, especially if sourced from somewhere in your area.

The best size rock for your landscaping depends on the design, as different boulders serve different purposes. If you want to group boulders to create a natural-looking cluster, you’ll need a range of sizes. Otherwise, here are some suggestions:

  • Small boulders (smaller than 12 inches across): Best for landscape edging and fire pits

  • Medium boulders (12–24 inches): Best for retaining walls and water features

  • Large boulders (more than 24 inches): Best as standalone landscaping features, steps, or walkways.

Of course, you can mix and match sizes to create a unique display.
