"I used to work in the security industry. Once I got married and had kids I definitely wanted a home security system. Bought ADT about a month ago and it’s worked out excellent. No glitches or issues and everyone was awesome in the buying and activation process."

"Austin and Northern Nevada Low volt are professional, competent, and fast. I had a problem with a person harassing my family. The police were out three times and finally one said, without evidence it is just your word against his, get some cameras. I went on-line and began to search. Northern Nevada Low Volt was half the cost of the national companies. But what sealed the deal was Austin’s respectful personality and his competence in the field of security. So, the perp was tenacious and soon we had some evidence. The judge agreed and we were successful in getting a temporary protection order. That was two months ago, and we have had no problem since. As a bonus, our kids can no longer lie to us about what time they got home, we got them on camera."

Home Security Systems questions, answered by experts

Yes, there are, and they often come with a screw set to ensure they stay secure. They run on batteries, depend on WiFi, and often require a WiFi extender. These typically cost less than $50. Doorbell cameras like these are great for renters who can't install a wired solution. However, a wired doorbell camera is a better choice for homeowners looking to invest wisely in home security.

In general, keyless door locks are considered safe, and their security depends on the type and quality of the lock. They cannot be picked like a traditional lock and often include added features like biometric access, PIN codes, and smartphone connectivity, which can make them more secure. However, they are not without risks. Potential vulnerabilities include hacking for Wi-Fi-connected models, battery failure, power outages, and technical malfunctions. To maximize security, it is important to choose a reliable brand, stay on top of software updates, and perform regular maintenance. While the risks are different, keyless locks are not considered more dangerous than traditional locks.

Expect to spend an average of $150 to $500 to set up a home flood detection system. However, be aware that costs are wide-ranging. You might only spend a budget-friendly $50 to place basic, battery-operated sensors in a few key areas of your home, or $150 to set up two or three smart sensors. The purchase and professional installation of a whole-home protection system with water shutoff capabilities could cost between $500 and $1,000.

Hiring a professional ensures optimal camera placement, secure installation, and integration with existing security systems. Professionals ensure reliable operation and can offer system customization to suit specific security needs or preferences.

A keypad deadbolt, a lock requiring a code entered on a keypad entry, can be a convenient option for families with children coming in and out and needing access to the home. It can also offer an easy solution if you rent your home out, since you can easily change the code as needed. So, depending on your home entry’s needs, a keypad deadbolt may be worth the extra expense.
