"I had several bids from other tree services in the Reno / Carson area, but Ohana Tree Bros. gave me the most reasonable quote. It only got better from there. The crew showed up (Luis, Alex and Donald) on time as scheduled, and did an absolutely amazing job removing a giant old dead cottonwood which was in a precarious position between our house and garage. A wrong move could have caused a disaster but there were no wrong moves with this crew. Luis was especially good. He was hard working, polite and very competent. They also did a trim-up maintenance job on an old Elm we had that was in sorry shape. Clean up afterward was very thorough. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing a business do such great work in a really long time. Two thumbs up!!"

Small jobs welcome

"Donald was excellent!!Never expected my ash tree to look so refreshed and healthy after removal of the ivy ( almost from the ground to the top of the tree)Honest, hardworking. He was at least $400 under the next lowest estimate. He was spot on his estimated time frame. . He is now my go to arborist for any of my work related to trees. I would recommend Donald at Arbtrek to anyone who wants excellent work for an honest price!! Just incredible!!"

"Nick and his guys did a very excellent job trimming my very big tree. They got all of the dead branches trimmed. They also did a good job on cleaning up all the branches that they cut off of the tree. Definitely would recommend their services. Also the price they quoted me was a responsible price for the size of tree they trimmed."

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Stump grinding consists of removing the visible part of the stump, but the roots remain intact. Depending on the tree and root system, the roots may still grow after stump grinding. If you are concerned about root growth and damage, you may want to consider having a stump removed completely.

There are several methods to hollow out a tree stump, and the best one depends on your tools, experience, and priorities. Common methods include using a chisel and hammer, a chainsaw, or burning.

  • Chisel and Hammer: This is often considered the easiest approach for those with limited tools or experience, though it is the most time-consuming.

  • Chainsaw: Using a chainsaw is the fastest method, but it comes with significant safety risks, especially for inexperienced users.

  • Burning: This can be an effective method, but it is not recommended unless you can first drill holes into the stump. Without holes, the stump will be difficult to light and may not burn completely through.

A power drill with at least a ⅜-inch diameter bit can make the job quicker and easier, regardless of the primary method. While you can use a chisel or chainsaw without a drill, it will require more time and effort. Always wear protective goggles and thick gloves, as splinters are an inevitable risk.

The felling notch you make before you make the final cut will determine which way the tree will fall. The cut will be in a wedge or triangle, and the tree will fall from the highest point of the triangle. You can use this, as well as the process described above, to estimate where a tree will fall.

You need to remove all branches affected by Dutch elm disease. If your tree has several affected branches, you will probably need to remove the entire tree. First, consult a pro to be sure that you’ve correctly identified it as an elm tree. Make sure the tree is properly disposed of with a plastic covering or through debarking, chipping, or burning.

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.
