There are a couple of signs that will tell you it’s time to bleed the radiator. If the radiator is making noises, it’s typically because of trapped air, which you can release by bleeding the radiator. You can also test the radiator by turning on your heat and then placing your hand near the top and bottom of the radiator. If you feel cold spots, particularly at the top of the radiator, it’s time to bleed it.

In many cases, yes, you can fix a radiator without replacing it, and it’s usually more affordable to do so. Radiators are relatively simple fixtures that shouldn’t run into many issues, but when you do have a radiator problem, the solutions typically require minimal materials and just an hour or so of labor. The only issue that demands a full radiator replacement is if the unit itself is cracked. This typically occurs only with aging systems.

Over time, a radiator can leak if turned off due to the built-up air pressure, which can cause water or coolant to leak. If your radiator leaks when it’s off, turn your whole system off and bleed the radiator, then turn it back on. If it’s still leaking, you might want to have an HVAC professional look at the issue.

A home radiator works by using radiation and convection to transfer heat throughout your home. Electric radiators use metal to conduct heat and warm the air, which then rises to warm the room. Steam and hot water radiators work with a boiler and piping system to pump thermal energy throughout the home. Hot water radiators use a boiler to heat the water before circulating it to the radiator, while steam heating radiator systems convert the heated water to steam before circulating it out. When the water or steam cools, it travels back to the boiler to be heated again.

If you have multiple radiators, start by bleeding a first-floor radiator that is farthest from the boiler. Work your way toward the boiler on the first floor before moving to the next floor, where you’ll again start by bleeding the radiator farthest from the boiler. Continue this pattern for radiators on each floor until they’ve all been bled.
