"Some of the crew members of Forever Green are the children and former workers of a now retired Tree God who had been taking care of all things tree related since I was a child. These kids, now adults, were taught not just tree knowledge, but tree science. All pruning encourages growth, so if a tree is trimmed improperly or viciously assaulted with a chain saw by an untrained landscaper, the tree will escalate its growth, become massively top-heavy, severely damaged, and become dangerous to itself and your property and home. Forever Green knows how much or how little should be removed to help the tree to thrive and also satisfy power line requirements and homeowner concerns. They have slimmed my quite majestic Gum Tree when it was damaged by high winds and heavy downpours so that it doesn’t become prone to further damage if that weather pattern repeats itself. The second time we called them was to cut down two 60-ft dead Spruce trees that had the dreaded Spruce disease where they turn into skeletons. One was very close to the house. I don’t know how they did it, but the areas were left practically spotless. Just know if Forever Green is on your property, they can be trusted to do an incredibly skilled job, a very neat job, and it will be done the right way for the ultimate health of your landscape. You may be looking to identify maple trees to use for home improvement projects. In that case, you can tell hard maples by looking at their leaves. Leaves will have a U-shaped dip, or sinus, between the points, or lobes, of the leaves. Leaves of soft maples tend to have V-shaped sinuses.

If you already have the cut wood in front of you, look for a light, uniform color to identify hard maple wood and check for variations of red, gray, or brown streaks and an overall darker color in soft maple wood.

For small trees, tree removal should take just a couple of hours to complete. Assume that a mid-sized tree will take between four and eight hours, depending on the extent of the equipment required and the health of the tree. Remember to add up to two hours for stump removal. Larger trees could take as long as one or two working days, about eight hours each.

Unfortunately, palm tree stumps are one of the most difficult types to remove due to how their roots grow. Unlike other trees, palm tree roots grow horizontally and vertically. Palm tree roots grow as deep as three feet into the ground, although soil and growing conditions could mean they go as far as 50 inches into the earth. 

If you want to be able to repurpose the grass in the area where you removed a stump later, you’ll have to dig quite deep—and perhaps wide—to trim away all the roots.

Trees should be pruned every two to five years, depending on its age and type. Young trees should be inspected and pruned every two to three years. Mature trees should be inspected and trimmed every three to five years, and fruit trees should be pruned annually with a careful eye on seasonal growth. Evergreens typically don’t need pruning, unless branches or limbs are damaged, diseased, or harboring pests.

Pruning trees during the summer can be a bad idea because the new growth will take place during the hottest months of the year, which can stress your tree out. Similarly, pruning during the early fall can be a bad idea, too, because you’d be stimulating new growth when most trees are aiming to go dormant. 

Pruning recommendations will vary by the type of tree, but generally, waiting until winter to prune your trees is a good idea.
