"It was an Angie's List Big Deal that we purchased. It was fine. We actually have to call them back because the leak is happening again. We really don't have a problem with them. It is just a really hard issue with my house. This is the third plumbing company that has come in and tried to deal with this water source. They are the ones that actually did dig out an entire hole. They dug out the ceiling of that bedroom, cut it all open, ran the water, saw when the water was coming down and from where. Then they fixed it. Now there is warped paint in the same place. It is on my to-do list to call them back to see where we move from here. The interaction was good and I don't have anything bad to say about them, other than we are here again. They were pretty prompt in coming out. They were really great on every other issue except the problem came back."

"I hired Jim to do some maintenance work on my roof which is old and in need of repair.  It's a compound roof with areas of slate, copper, and old tin.  All these areas have leaked in the recent past, and will eventually need to be replaced.  Jim knows how to work with all these materials and found the sources for leaks that others have missed.  He seems to understand how old roofs are built.  We will be talking about a larger roof project in the spring.  In one place I needed some custom molding and carpentry to repair storm damage and I was pleasantly surprised at how well Jim did this work.  He got the custom milling done for less than I could have myself.

Jim and I are also talking about other work including carpentry, painting, drywall and bathroom remodeling.  Though the work Jim has done for me so far has been mainly roof repair and handyman type small jobs, I am convinced he is a good general builder and I intend to use him again as such.  I've already recommended him to my next door neighbor."

Glass Block questions, answered by experts

Yes, professionals can install decorative or colored glass block patterns for a unique look.

Installing glass block windows has benefits and disadvantages, as with most materials. The pros and cons can vary depending on the type of glass block and the window location.

Pros

  • Maintains privacy while letting light into the bathroom

  • Energy efficient

  • Sealed to prevent drafts

  • Aesthetically pleasing

  • Strong and secure

Cons

  • Costly to install

  • Challenging installation

  • Challenging repair

Yes, many professionals provide custom-cut glass replacements for enclosures that require precise sizing.

Although glass block windows are made of multiple layers of thick glass, they can still break. If an individual block shatters, it can be removed and replaced, but this is a job for a window repair professional. The project is often complex and may require breaking the block further for removal. Do not attempt to handle it yourself, as the broken glass can be dangerously sharp. A professional will have the necessary tools and expertise to replace the broken glass block quickly and safely. Before hiring, confirm that the repair pro has experience with this specific type of window.

Glass block installation can be relatively expensive due to the range of material costs and the labor time to assemble this type of specialty window. The process proceeds slowly as the glass does not absorb moisture from mortar and silicone caulk takes longer to harden, leaving spacers to hold up the structure until the caulk or mortar begins to cure. Plus, if your current windows have structural issues or damage, you’ll need to repair them before beginning the project, increasing your bottom line.
