"Dan and his team are so very friendly, most capable, punctual, respectful of my time and house, available by phone/text with immediate response time. They did dry wall install/repair/replace & paint (walls & ceilings) in 4 rooms + 2 hallways + 3 bathrooms + installed a ceiling (+paint) in the basement. Very reasonable price. Completely satisfied."

"Bryan quickly responded to my inquiry for masonry work. He was available to give us a quote, which was very fair, and could perform the work later that same week. He and his team expertly repaired our crumbled retaining wall and Belgium block curb. The work was immaculate and exceedingly professional. On top of that, he accessed that our chimney cap was cracked, so he volunteered to fix it for just a bit extra. He documented the entire process with photos which he sent to me. As an interior designer who is in the practice of recommending various professionals, I would definitely call ALB Brothers Construction. I will recommend them to anyone needing masonry, roofing, chimney and gutters. This was a very satisfying experience and I am glad we found them!"

Customers say: Quick response

"Glenn is very professional, reliable, takes pride in his work and does things right. He was very quick to respond to my inquiry, came to see the job and later that day sent me a quote with a start date 2 days later. I had some water damage in my basement, needed insulation and sheetrock installation/repair and painting on sections where I had damage. He did a wonderful job patching and installing the drywall as well as carefully picking the exact match for the wall colors, now my walls look brand new. I will work with him again in the future, and do not hesitate to recommend him highly."

Wall Repair questions, answered by experts

Sand and gravel are two suitable options for filling behind a retaining wall. If you’re building your own retaining wall, you’ll complete this part of the process—known as backfilling—after you finish laying the blocks. Make sure not to skip it—otherwise, you could wind up with drainage issues, which can cause your retaining wall to collapse.

Generally speaking, a retaining wall should be between 3 and 4 feet high, depending on variables such as the wall-building material, the purpose of the retaining wall, and more. If you want your retaining wall to be taller than 4 feet, check with your local building ordinance office for the maximum allotment. You may also need a special permit for retaining walls over 4 feet tall.

Poured concrete is often the cheapest material for a retaining wall, costing around $6 to $8 per square foot. Other budget-friendly options include vinyl and landscaping timbers, which range from $10 to $15 per square foot; landscaping timbers are particularly well-suited for DIY projects. Untreated timber and railroad ties are a step up in price, starting at $15 to $25 per square foot. Natural stones can also be a cost-effective choice if you can source them from your own property, but they can be expensive to purchase. High-end materials like steel are typically the most expensive but offer superior durability and aesthetics.

DIY is possible for small projects. Professional installation ensures structural integrity and durability for larger walls.

Small retaining walls still require a foundation of some kind, typically a concrete footing. This helps to ensure the wall is structurally sound and prevents the ground from shifting over time, especially during those winter freeze/thaw cycles. The footing helps spread the weight of the wall and the load it carries over a larger area of the ground, thus assisting with stability. This is true of small retaining walls, larger rock garden walls, and the like.
