Customers say: Quick response

"Connor from Stonewall Structural Engineering showed up promptly on time. He went under my 93-year-old house without hesitation to check out the foundation issues. Within two hours he walked me through all his findings in detail and gave me some suggestions. I received a detailed, sealed report in 4 days with pictures, and multiple ways to resolve my issues. I hope to never need a structural engineer again, but I'll definitely be using Stonewall if I need an inspection again."

Small jobs welcome

Offers commercial services

I am a licensed Professional Engineer providing structural engineering services for residential and small commercial projects. I work with homeowners, contractors, and design professionals to help move projects through the permit process by providing structural calculations, drawings, evaluations, and engineering letters as needed.\n\nIn-person structural inspections are available in Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia. Remote structural consulting is available in Delaware and North Carolina.\n\nTypical projects include load-bearing wall removal, beam and header sizing, additions, decks, foundation concerns, and framing evaluations. My goal is to provide practical, code-compliant structural solutions that are clear, efficient, and tailored to the project.

"

Very well.  I feel so comfortable about the stability of my home.  Jim, the owner of the company, was always looking for the best and most reasonable way to solve a problem.  His crew was hard working and came to work when they said they would (except for the rainy periods of course).  The house was empty so they stayed at my home (so they could be close to the job) and kept very good care of it.

It was an expensive repair but I believe I could not have found a better crew for the same price. Since I was out of state much of the time, they kept me informed at every step, which is helpful when you can not be there.
I definitely would recommend them for waterproofing but I was most impressed with their ability to do the structural reinforcement."

Structural Engineering questions, answered by experts

After completing structural engineering work in Wilmington, schedule a six-month settlement inspection, then annual structural inspections to monitor for shifting or moisture intrusion. Keep as-built drawings and material warranties organized for future reference. Regularly check for corrosion and foundation movement, especially after major storms. Notify your insurance provider of completed upgrades and ensure all documentation aligns with current building codes.

Helpful?

For structural engineering projects in Wilmington, keep a digital level for precise measurements, a moisture meter for monitoring humidity, and a dehumidifier to control dampness. Stock marine-grade sealants, galvanized fasteners, and anti-corrosion primers to protect against salt air. Having concrete crack sealers, waterproofing membranes, and a reliable flashlight will help with routine structural inspection and foundation care throughout the year.

Helpful?

To maintain structural integrity in Wilmington, inspect for freeze-thaw cycles and moisture damage each spring, reinforce hurricane protections in summer, and check for storm-related issues in fall. In winter, monitor for excess humidity and condensation. Keep a detailed maintenance log, take monthly photos for comparison, and schedule an annual review with a local structural engineer. Prompt post-storm inspections help catch hidden issues early.

Helpful?

Before starting structural engineering projects in Wilmington, secure all required permits early and verify if your property falls within a flood zone. Arrange for soil testing and a property survey to identify site-specific challenges. Assess for environmental hazards such as asbestos, and plan your project timeline around hurricane and rainy seasons. Inform your insurance company, confirm financing, and lock in material selections to avoid unexpected delays.

Helpful?

When hiring structural engineering pros in Wilmington, prioritize those with extensive experience in coastal engineering and a deep understanding of local hurricane wind load and flood zone requirements. Look for professionals who demonstrate expertise in managing salt air corrosion, have a strong grasp of Wilmington’s building codes, and maintain solid relationships with local contractors. Confirm they carry proper insurance and have a proven history with sandy soil conditions.
