"I engaged Top Rail to fully fence in over an acre and put in two tall privacy fences and gates. From the initial consultation with Terry, to the super responsive feedback and Q&A with owner Drew, to the exceptional on-site communication from Ben, the experience was a 10/10. I would hire them again without hesitation and highly recommend them to anyone. Their work product is outstanding!"

Small jobs welcome

"I hired Cliff to create an office space from my dining room. Not only does he appear to be a genuinely good guy, he and his team did a fantastic job! I know have an enclosed, serene office space to work from home in. The job was done quickly and efficiently and everyone involved was very approachable and friendly to work with. Pricing was fair and transparent. He is very good with communication which is something I've found lacking with other contractors I've worked with. I plan on hiring him for another project as well. I definitely recommend him!"

"Leo contacted me and he came out and gave me a quote. The quote was fantastic compared to others who came out. He was here when he said he would be and did an excellent job preparing the yard and the sod install. I would hire him again to do any work for me. GREAT JOB and price."

"100% satisfied! Kyle's crew put a new tile floor down in my lanai and I could not be happier. The work was superb, his crew did a wonderful job and left the site sparkling clean. And Kyle was so easy to communicate with. He responded right away anytime I had a question. And the price was very fair. I will absolutely use Sternersen Construction for any future projects!"

Fencing questions, answered by experts

For fencing projects in Wilmington, you must obtain a fence permit from the City of Wilmington Development Services before installation begins. Properties within a historic district also require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission. Always consult the City of Wilmington Planning Department for current fence regulations and check for any homeowners' association rules or public utility easements that may affect your project's approval.

Helpful?

Homeowners in Wilmington often overlook the need for official permits from the City of Wilmington, leading to fines or removal orders. Installing fences on utility easements or exceeding height limits set by local ordinances are frequent errors. Choosing materials not suited for coastal weather can cause premature deterioration. Failing to consult the Historic Preservation Commission or ignoring HOA rules can also result in costly setbacks and project delays.

Helpful?

In Wilmington, fence maintenance depends on your chosen material and the coastal environment. The City of Wilmington recommends annual inspections for signs of corrosion, rot, or storm damage. Wood fences require sealing or staining every few years, while vinyl and aluminum need periodic cleaning to remove salt buildup. Promptly repairing loose posts or damaged panels helps extend the life of your fence and maintains curb appeal.

Helpful?

In Wilmington, aluminum and vinyl fencing are recommended for their resilience against coastal humidity and salt air, according to local contractors and the City of Wilmington's guidance on durable materials. Pressure-treated wood is popular but needs regular maintenance due to moisture exposure. For low-maintenance options, composite fencing is gaining popularity. Local building supply centers in Wilmington typically stock materials suited for the region's climate and soil conditions.

Helpful?

Before starting a fencing project in Wilmington, review the City of Wilmington's Unified Development Ordinance for fence height and setback requirements. Secure all necessary permits from Development Services and, if applicable, approval from the Historic Preservation Commission. Contact NC 811 to have underground utilities marked before digging. Confirm any HOA guidelines and schedule required inspections to ensure your fence installation meets all local codes and avoids costly delays.
