"I researched the pros & cons re: duct cleaning. I learned much, or I thought. After speaking with Mr. Trivette from Appalachian AirDucts, he took the time to explain about their equipment, how it works, the benefits and results. His patience with me during our conversation demonstrates his commitment to costumer service. Our home was built in 1997, we bought the house Dec. of 2012, almost four years ago. Not sure if the air ducts, vents and dryer vent had ever been cleaned before. Set up a date & time for the work to be done. Mr. Trivette and his helper were polite upon their arrival, professional in their work duties and very clean. They went above & beyond when cleaning the dryer vent. The connecting flexable tube had a tear where it connects to the dryer. They took the time to repair, reconnect and ensure its proper working condition. I highly recommend Appalachian AirDucts. Oh one last thing, their prices are great."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

No. Your furnace does not run your air conditioner. Both units use the same system of ductwork to move conditioned air throughout your home, but you can have a furnace without having an air conditioner and vice versa. Furnaces are only for heating your home. You can buy a system that does both, however, like a split system or a heat pump (yes, heat pumps cool, too).

Yes, the furnace and AC use the same blower. The blower is located in the base of the furnace and pushes hot air out of the furnace and into the ducts. It also pushes cool air through the home when the air conditioning is on. Even though the furnace and air conditioning work independently of one another, the blower is an essential component for both systems.

You may never need an AC recharge if there are no leaks. However, if your AC unit has a leak that cannot be patched appropriately, you’ll need an AC recharge every time the freon level drops low enough that it disrupts your system—this could be once every two to three years. It all depends on the size and frequency of the leak.

The simplest indicator is how long it’s been since your last tune-up. You should schedule an annual AC tune-up each spring. Beyond that, there are multiple signs that your AC needs a quick check by a professional. These issues include higher-than-average energy bills, decreased air flow from vents, higher indoor temperatures, and an air conditioning unit that stays on all the time or frequently turns on and off.

To keep your air conditioner in good working condition, you should have it serviced by a professional at least once per year, ideally in the spring before the cooling season begins. If your AC unit is 10 years or older, consider servicing it twice a year (once in the spring and once in the fall) to catch potential problems early and help it reach its full lifespan. During a service visit, a technician will inspect, clean, and replace parts as needed. Regular maintenance helps avoid costly repairs. As a DIY task, you can also clean the evaporator coils annually.
