"I highly recommend this excavating company! They were professional, dependable, and did an excellent job from start to finish. They communicated clearly, showed up when promised, and made sure everything was completed properly. The finished work looks great, and they left the property clean and organized. I would definitely use them again!"

Customers say: Super punctual

"It was very smooth. Initial meeting occurred as scheduled. Estimate and contract were detailed and professional and within our budget. There was a scheduling delay on my part which they accommodated graciously. Once work began(at time scheduled) 8 workers showed up and began construction immediately. Materials used were of high quality. The execution of the design exceeded our expectations. We were very pleased with the finished product and would not hesitate to either use them for other projects or to highly recommend them to neighbors and friends."

"We had a pond installed by Tim and his crew. The excavator operator / Foreman, Chad, was phenomenol to not only work with but to watch work. The whole process was easy and straightforward. My only complaint is that I didnt hire them sooner"

"Refreshingly seamless from Day 1-no fuss, no muss...project started with a construction site safe and cleaned up everyday before leaving and stayed that way daily until project completed on time and on budget...made a couple changes ‘on the fly’ as we were converting a garage to a 4th bedroom with walkin closet and full bath. Have contracted for many successful remodels in the past that were well run, on time, on budget, and contractor lived up to his end of bargain, and this project was no different. I would use and recommend W and W Construction on any size remodel or new construction."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

In most areas, you will need a permit for excavation work, even for projects that only involve grading or yard leveling. Permit requirements depend on your local government and the scope of the project, but they are especially common for significant digging or work that could affect utilities or public property. These permits help protect the local topography and prevent drainage issues. An experienced excavation company will typically know whether permits are needed and can often handle the process of pulling and closing them for you. You can also verify permit requirements by contacting your local building department and describing your project.

There are several different factors that influence how long it takes to excavate. For a foundation, it could take anywhere from three days to three weeks. It can take even longer if you face weather-related delays or an inaccessible site that’s riddled with boulders and rough terrain. It may also take longer if you have clay soil, which is more difficult to dig.

How deep your septic system needs to be into the ground depends on several factors. In extremely cold environments, the tank needs to rest below the maximum frost line, which can be up to six or eight feet deep. The standard burying depth for most systems is between a few inches and four feet below ground level. Depth can also depend on the slope of the landscaping and other property variables.

If you don’t have a crawl space but have a partial basement you want to make deeper, you can expect to spend a little less—between $40,000 and $90,000 on average. However, if you’re not adding new finished square footage, you won’t see much in the way of ROI.

You do not have to dig footers for a deck as long as it meets local code and holds up to weather in your area. If you live somewhere that experiences high winds and earthquakes, you may need to dig for your deck posts. Deck blocks, post anchors with base plates, and helical pile systems are the three no-dig deck post options you can choose from if local code permits.
