"My gravel driveway in Black Mountain, NC had needed repairs for a long time and the situation became much worse after a plumbing company installed a new sewer line under it. I contacted David Gibson about repairing the driveway as he had previously done excellent work in fixing my foundation that was settling. David and his crew arrived when expected and had to excavate and install extra sub base and gravel due to the much deteriorated condition of my driveway. I am very pleased with the work and I highly recommend him for fixing any driveway or foundation problems."

"5 STAR LANDSCAPING/HARDSCAPING COMPANY!!! LOOK NO FURTHER!! From Zack (the company owner), to Laura (head of office operations), to James (the on-site manager) to the entire crew at the job site----the whole team at ZR Landscaping & Grading is AMAZING to work with!! I found ZR on the Angi site. I called the office and Laura set up a meeting in a timely manner with Zack to visit our home to go over our landscaping/hardscaping needs. Within 15 minutes of touring the property with Zack, my husband and I knew we wanted him to do the work for us----he understood our vision and had terrific ideas about the possibilities for our yard. When we found out that the company had done work for the Biltmore Estate, we were sold! ZR first installed a flagstone patio in the back yard, then a wall and cement pad as an extension off our driveway. They did such an excellent job that we knew we had to engage the team for the â really bigâ job of revamping our front yard. Our front yard is a slope which consisted of a couple of trees, some ill-placed bushes and loads of mulch---basically a hill of mulch. Not pleasing to the eye at all. Plus we had drainage issues. Zack met with us to review the job. I had been doing some research and had come up with a plan----it consisted of a combination of hardscaping and landscaping---and I provided photos of examples I had found online. I wanted terracing, steps, walls, flagstone, and LOADS of varying plants---my dream landscape! Zack understood exactly what we wanted. Our job was scheduled and in the weeks before the start date, I put together my plant â wish listâ . There were over 50 types of plants/shrubs/trees on that list! Laura worked really hard to make the wish list a reality for me. She spent so much time contacting different suppliers to find as many of the plants as possible. It being later in the growing season, this was no easy feat. She researched plant types and varieties and passed along her knowledge to me as well as advice from suppliers. Once all the plants had been purchased, she made sure that the team on-site had a list of what plants were to go in shade versus sun to help organize the placement. Laura went above and beyond as she knew that the plants were the most important part of the whole project for me and I am so indebted to her. The job started on a Monday and the team completed the job in exactly 1 week, even with rain delays and lots of mud---incredible! We now have a grand stone staircase, an upper and a lower natural stone retaining wall, 2 smaller natural stone retaining walls in the middle of the hill which all give the terracing effect we were looking for. The concrete sidewalk that leads to the front porch was transformed into a flagstone walkway and it ties into the stone used for the walls. All of the drainage issues were resolved by the installation of river rock gullies and revamping the old drain system. And did I mention the plants?! ð Loads of wonderful beauties planted. The hill of mulch is no more---it has been replaced by a gorgeous, artistic landscape. If you are looking for a company to go above and beyond, to give you a truly top notch experience, call ZR. You will know it is done right, with integrity and honesty. Thanks for reading!"

"Refreshingly seamless from Day 1-no fuss, no muss...project started with a construction site safe and cleaned up everyday before leaving and stayed that way daily until project completed on time and on budget...made a couple changes ‘on the fly’ as we were converting a garage to a 4th bedroom with walkin closet and full bath. Have contracted for many successful remodels in the past that were well run, on time, on budget, and contractor lived up to his end of bargain, and this project was no different. I would use and recommend W and W Construction on any size remodel or new construction."

"Ron and crew took down two trees, one large one very close to the house. They cleared up all debris and carted away. Ron cut the trees very low to the ground for us. Very good price, best quote we got. We would highly recommend and will use them again."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

The best method for digging a trench depends on the scope of the project. For a short, shallow trench (less than 2 feet deep) in light, soft soil, digging by hand may be sufficient. However, digging by hand is labor-intensive, so consider the effort required. A machine trencher is the better option for longer trenches (over 100 feet), deeper ones, or when dealing with difficult soil conditions, such as rocky or hard ground, or obstructions like tree roots. A machine can save significant time and energy in these situations.

No, you typically cannot use metal detectors to find your sewer line. Most sewer lines are made of non-metallic materials such as PVC, clay, or cast iron, which are not detectable by standard metal detectors. Metal detectors are designed to locate metallic objects, so they won't be effective for identifying the path of a non-metallic sewer line. To locate your sewer line accurately, it's best to use other methods.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.

Digging a bush up by the roots is the most natural DIY method for removing a bush stump. Start by identifying the shrub type and revealing its roots. Cut the shrub to its base and loosen the soil, ensuring no utility lines are nearby. Optionally, treat the base with herbicide, then dig around the roots and cut a circle around the shrub using various tools. Dig a trench, cut the base of the root ball, and finally fill the hole to prevent regrowth. This thorough process ensures complete removal without damaging surrounding areas.

Landscape edging is more DIYable than trenching. You can DIY your own digging projects, but proceed carefully and only with proper knowledge of the equipment and appropriate safety measures in place. Keep in mind the project's scope and estimate how long it will take you to do it on your own. While you can certainly save money by DIYing home improvement projects, you can’t exactly hide an unfinished—or worse, ruined— landscaping job from the neighbors. It’s always safer to call an excavation pro near you to get an estimate.
