"My wife and I hired Jesse Summerlin for two related projects â a rebuild/upgrade of an existing deck along with a dedicated platform added for a hot tub. This was a challenging project since the deck is 10 feet off the ground and the platform, being downhill from the deck, ended up being over 20 feet high. The latter was designed by an engineer who provided sealed drawings. Jesse and his team built the platform exactly to spec. Jesse also worked closely with the hot tub installers and electricians to make sure everything was in synch. The deck rebuild had some unforeseen challenges due to past shoddy construction. Jesse found critical defects that others, including two inspectors, had missed. He was able to make repairs to the deck framing that left it rock solid. We replaced the old wooden decking with Timbertech Azek â a composite product I highly recommend. This was the first time Jesse had worked with that so he made sure to contact the manufacturer to ensure he was well educated on the installation requirements. His team had it in without a hitch. Throughout the project, Jesse was professional, communicative, and a joy to work with. We're exceedingly happy with the finished deck and hot tub platform. If we ever have an earthquake or mudslide on our mountain we're evacuating to the deck. The house may collapse down the hill but Jesse's deck isn't going anywhere."

"Living in GA - I found out in late February, my mother's house in NC - the pipe in the back bathroom under the sink had sprung a large leak and continued for nearly two weeks.  Aside from the enormous water bill, I had to call Service Master to come in and clean everything up which included tearing out all the wood flooring, bathroom tile, some of the sheet rock and the bottom wood trim.  Now for the rebuild - after obtaining estimates around the $8000 to $15,000 range which was way out of my budget - my last hope was Handy Home Helpers.  I contacted John through Angie's List, asked him if he could go to the house, work up and estimate and can we not exceed $6000.  At first, his estimate was about $2000 more than my budget but he did some finagling and worked up a deal exactly in my budget.
John and his crew showed up on time and worked for about 8 days (we agreed this was not a rush job!) and the end result was nothing short of miraculous.  The new laminate flooring and bathroom tile is beautiful.  He installed a new vanity/sink, set the toilet, did all the sheet rock/mud work, paint and trimmed everything out - it's outstanding!
He kept me in the loop with all the work and progress - sent pictures as well so I was informed the whole time.
I am giving John Kent and his company extremely high praise for a job well done and would recommend to anyone needing any type of construction/remodeling project done.  When time comes to remodel my house, I will gladly pay for him and his crew to travel to GA and do the work.

Garages questions, answered by experts

The difference between vinyl and rubber garage door bottom seals comes down to cost, flexibility, and climate. Vinyl is the budget-friendly option, lasting well in moderate climates and resisting wear and tear. In colder climates, it can get stiff and make installation more difficult. Alternatively, rubber offers more flexibility, even in freezing temperatures, and better sticks to uneven surfaces. Rubber is more expensive but tends to be more adaptable.

Adequate storage, workspaces, and energy-efficient systems are key considerations.

On average, a garage door can last between 15 and 30 years. However, this lifespan is influenced by several factors, including the quality and material of the door, local climate conditions, and how frequently it is used and maintained.

Key factors affecting longevity include:

  • Material: Wooden doors can last 20 to 30 years or more, while steel doors typically last 15 to 20 years. More robust options, like triple-layer steel, can last 25 to 30 years with proper care. The number of layers in a door also contributes to its durability, with each additional layer potentially adding five years to its life.

  • Maintenance: Regular inspections, cleaning, and immediate repairs can significantly extend the life of your garage door.

  • Usage and Climate: Doors in harsh climates or those used very frequently may wear out faster.

  • Components: Individual parts have different lifespans. For example, automatic openers may fail sooner than the door itself without regular maintenance, and garage door springs typically need replacement every 7 to 12 years.

While the door panels are designed to last as long as the door, they should be replaced sooner if they become visibly damaged, impact the door's smooth operation, or create a security risk.

Yes, a single garage door with an 8-foot width is considered standard. This will be the size needed if you are upgrading a garage door in nearly any standard-sized residential garage. If you are building a garage from scratch that you intend to use for parking a large truck, SUV, or RV, you can consider extending the width to 10 feet to make parking easier.

With the exception of small, lightweight torsion-spring garage doors, which can operate with one spring, most garage doors require two springs to work properly. Garage doors with extension springs always require two springs—if one extension spring is broken or otherwise failing, the garage door may open unevenly and could pose a hazard if the remaining spring fails.
