"Absolutely Fantastic I have worked with many wonderful contractors over the years but Rick Cox (dba Carolina Carpenter) is at the top of the list. He and his son, Josh, are extremely talented, resourceful and get the job done at a reasonable cost. They and the electrician, plumber and other professionals they use are delightful to work with and of the highest honesty and integrity. In June 2018 my wife and I purchased a house in Connestee Falls, Brevard, NC which was beautifully located but in need a great deal of work. After interviewing a number of contractors, we chose Rick because of his directness, obvious competence and easy manner. The renovation required complete gutting of the core areas, including the removal of several walls and a faux stone wood-burning fireplace. Rick started while we were still in NY and when we arrived in mid-August, he had neatly removed the fireplace. In the following 11 months, he replaced it with gas burning fireplaces in the living room and adjoining Master Bedroom (a very difficult thing to do in the space we had), expanded the rear hall, closed several exterior windows, installed 4 exterior windows and sliding doors, re-floored, re-sided and painted most of the common areas, rebuilt and upgraded the stairway to the lower level and put in a fantastic new kitchen. The project cost six figures and encountered many setbacks as removal of walls and floors exposed poor electrical work and many other preexisting deficiencies. However, in each case, Rick, Josh and his associates developed creative solutions and, as we went along, they helped us refine our vision of what we wanted so that the finished product far exceeded our initial expectations. With his fine carpentry expertise, Rick provided a new beamed ceiling and log mantle and wood work around the new living room fireplace which is itself the artistic focal point of the room. He also transformed an eye-sore half wall into a beautiful built-in cabinet which is integral to the new dining area. Rick and Josh work quietly and efficiently and are upfront about timelines and their availability. In fact, when the demands of a difficult new client caused them to fall behind the timeline they set, they worked on weekends to get current. You would be fortunate to have Rick and Josh working with you. We were. They came as workmen but stayed as friends. "My wife and I hired Jesse Summerlin for two related projects â a rebuild/upgrade of an existing deck along with a dedicated platform added for a hot tub. This was a challenging project since the deck is 10 feet off the ground and the platform, being downhill from the deck, ended up being over 20 feet high. The latter was designed by an engineer who provided sealed drawings. Jesse and his team built the platform exactly to spec. Jesse also worked closely with the hot tub installers and electricians to make sure everything was in synch. The deck rebuild had some unforeseen challenges due to past shoddy construction. Jesse found critical defects that others, including two inspectors, had missed. He was able to make repairs to the deck framing that left it rock solid. We replaced the old wooden decking with Timbertech Azek â a composite product I highly recommend. This was the first time Jesse had worked with that so he made sure to contact the manufacturer to ensure he was well educated on the installation requirements. His team had it in without a hitch. Throughout the project, Jesse was professional, communicative, and a joy to work with. We're exceedingly happy with the finished deck and hot tub platform. If we ever have an earthquake or mudslide on our mountain we're evacuating to the deck. The house may collapse down the hill but Jesse's deck isn't going anywhere."

"This father-and-son team is awesome. They were timely, communicative, and very fair. They started when they said they would, got the job done efficiently, and kept in touch with us about changes and innovations as the project went along. They were also totally honest with us about renovation ideas we had that would not have worked due to the condition and logistics of our home, which is 60 years old and sits on a steep hill. The E&A crew worked hard and left a spotless work space. The drywall in the office is as smooth as it can be -- you would never know this room was once part of an unfinished basement. We will definitely think of E&A first when we go ahead with other remodeling projects for our home."

"The area below the deck was covered with an oily, greasy, slippery residue ie, flagstone patio, stucco house walls, stone support pillars for deck, and numerous potted and bedding plants. Even the doormat was greasy. It had been explained to me that there would be a waiting period of 3 wks between the power wash of the joists and the spraying of the sealant. After the power wash I texted to remind the contractor for the stone area and plants to be covered, but did not know that the sealant would be applied the very next day to wet wood…and without any protective covering to the patio, pillars, house, and plants. Windows thankfully were covered. I slipped on the greasy doormat when I discovered the problem the next morning. I was not at home the day of the spraying. The cans left in the driveway said not to spray on wet wood, to protect areas/plants/objects not being sprayed, and remove immediately any overspray with compliant cleaner. I made the first payment for materials at Lowe’s ($3182.99) in July. The second payment was for posts and 2x4 wood ($1800-no receipt given) combined together with $7000 requested by contractor unexpectedly one Friday afternoon. He usually just dropped by- no appts or advance notice. Contractor left immediately after getting my check to “pay my guys”. At this point I have paid $11,982.01 toward the $14,500 contract, leaving approximately $2517. 01. Although Gerry has made numerous trips to my home, he has not brought me a copy of my signed contract or the second receipt for more materials -$1800. I asked at least 3-4 times for these documents. There was some adjustment to the original design because I did not want the small pickets seated on a huge horizontal 2x6 board. This necessitated a return of the bottom boards in exchange for smaller 2x4 boards which were then placed vertically at top and bottom to hold pickets. At the beginning of the project, I pointed out to the contractor that one of the existing posts had wood rot. Another post was unstable and I approved new posts. I had 7. He put in 14 per code but they were much smaller than original ones. That was ok with me. I have no receipt for the post wood (part of the $1800 I think) but a neighbor-house builder-contractor came by and checked Lowe’s cost for posts between $800-900. Other material might have been in that rounded figure, but again, I have no receipt. All of those posts were installed, but several were then removed because of damaged wood. I don’t feel I should pay labor twice for those posts, nor do I believe that the labor costs boosted my expenses to $18,000, a total figure the contractor jotted on a note paper, but we never discussed a new figure. Last week I asked to meet with the contractor at his convenience and asked again for him to bring my signed contract and receipts for the $1800 for “materials”. He chose 2 pm Friday, but at 3pm, I texted because he was not there. At 3:15 I told him we would need to reschedule. I had 2 appts with stone masons to assess the damage to my stonework. Both were shocked at the damage and explained that flagstone absorbs oil and power washing would not remove all the blotchy stains. They also looked at the pillars and chimney stone which was turned dark from the oil and the gravel in the driveway which was turned black. There were oil drip lines on the stucco walls and a few areas where stones had been broken from the chimney, patio, and a post. They described the procedure for removing stones to replace damaged areas so they would not be “puzzled” in with small pieces. Those areas needed to be rebuilt. Someone glued random stones into the patio and chimney with white apoxy on Friday after 5 pm after I left for dinner. These areas will need to be removed and properly repaired. I contacted an attorney at the suggestion of the stone masons and the staff at Sherman Williams Paint store when I showed them pictures. The staff at Sherman Williams also said the wood should have been dried for 3weeks, even tho it was treated wood. When I texted the contractor that I needed an attorney, he wanted to pressure wash the patio etc and put siding in 2 places and then he would be “finished”. I believe the patio and stonework Will need some significant repairs and the contractor’s liability insurance might need to be explored. I cannot make a further payment until the stone damage has been corrected by a stonework professional and a final figure is fairly negotiated. I don’t think the expense of righting my property damage and getting legal advice to do it is my responsibility."

"Trevor has been an amazing contractor who has helped us through the process of installing a large interior door for an office. He has helped ensure the space was properly prepared for installation of the door. The other contractors who have assisted Trevor have also exceeded my expectations. Garages questions, answered by experts

Although the cost of glass garage doors is a concern, a bigger concern is safety against high-wind storms and burglars breaking the glass. If you use tempered or impact glass on your garage door, it’s more shatter-resistant than standard glass. This is safer in a storm where you don’t want shards of glass flying around. However, if a burglar wants to access your garage, the glass door is easier to break into than a solid wood or metal garage door.

If you open your garage manually, you don’t need sensors. If you have an automatic garage door opener, sensors are required by law. The federal law UL 325 mandates that all residential garage door openers in the U.S. must include sensors. Designed to prevent accidents and reduce the risk of entrapment, the sensors should be able to reverse the motion of the garage door within two seconds of detecting an obstruction. The sensors are there to keep you, your family, and your belongings safe from a door that might otherwise come down too hard or too fast.

The best method for painting a garage door depends on the door's design and the finish you want to achieve. For the most professional-looking finish, especially on doors with panels or intricate details, a paint sprayer is an excellent choice. It can easily get into hard-to-reach places and provide a smooth, even coat.

If you don't have a sprayer, or if your door is flat, a combination of a roller and a brush is the most effective approach. Use a roller for the large, flat sections to cover the area quickly and efficiently. For the best results, experts recommend a roller with a nap between ⅜ and ¾ inches thick; natural fibers can also help ensure an even coat.

A brush is essential for handling the finer details. Use it to paint grooves, angles, small panels, and the edges of the door where you need more control.

Regardless of the tools you use, it's a good idea to step back after the main application to review your work and use a detail brush to touch up any missed spots.

It’s best to prevent cold air from entering your garage through the space underneath the garage door. Stop cold air in its tracks by adding or replacing the weatherstripping underneath the door seal. You can also add weatherstripping along the sides and top of the garage door to prevent air leakage, and it’s a relatively easy DIY fix.

It can take anywhere from a couple of hours to a day or two to clean out a garage. Times vary depending on the garage size, accessibility, and the amount and type of items that need sorting and lifting. A triple-car garage full of decades of clutter will take much longer to clear than a single garage with just a few unwanted bulky items.
