"Justin came within a half an hour of my phone call, and he worked the rest of the day taking out the old water heater and installing a brand new one. He demonstrated expert workmanship and excellent knowledge of all aspects of installing a gas water heater. It was a wonderful experience and I would definitely call this company if anyone needs emergency service with a leaking old water heater. :-)"

Customers say: Quality work

"I was the listing agent for the home and the sellers decided to fix the water heater themselves. However, Roger did go out to the property and gave an estimate, and the estimate for the work needed was very reasonable. He was polite and professional on the phone, was quick to go out and look at the issue, and was willing work it in before his vacation, which was above and beyond. I will absolutely call him in the future with any plumbing issues."

"I had noticed water in the pan under my old water heater.  I called the provider, explained the problem and they arranged for someone to come the next morning.  The next morning, they arrived at the time they said they would, promptly looked at my old water heater and determined that it needed to be replaced.  As the old water heater was in my attic and the expansion tank looked unstable, they recommended immediate replacement.  I asked about options, including a tankless water heaters.  The provider gave me clear factual information on the various options so that I could make an informed decision.  They installed the new water heater that morning.  The installation went well and they left my residence in perfect order.  I would definitely recommend Ethical Plumbing to anyone needing plumbing work.  They provided quick, good quality services with no hassles.

"Never having had this same problem before, it is hard to make a cost comparison. But our sense is that, in an urgent situation, we were not taken advantage of or pressured. We got quick response -- were told how to stop further leakage, and got new water heater installed the same day. Also learned about services in future that can prevent some forseeable issues. Richard was personable and professionable. He called when en route, and sent photo so we'd recognize him. He was knowledgeable, and explained situation and our options thoroughly. Then he acted expeditiously to turn a potential disaster (with company coming!) into a relatively fast "save" with no significant cleanup/damage to address afterward. We had been without a regular plumber, and knew we needed one. Now we've found one we like and trust. Hard to put a price tag on that!"

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Most hot water heater manufacturers recommend replacing the anode rod about once every three to five years. Anode rods sacrifice themselves by collecting iron, limestone, and other minerals that would otherwise corrode your hot water heater tank. This abuse wears them out long before your water heater does. Check the rod when you remove it and replace it if more than 50% of the metal has been consumed. Check the rod more frequently if you have hard water or use a water softener.

Yes, this would be an appropriate choice. In order to comply with the National Electric Code’s rules, you'll need to install a circuit breaker that's 125% larger than the intended load. In this case, you'll multiply 30 amps by 1.25 to find the necessary breaker size. Plugging that equation in for your 30-amp water heater will leave you with a 37.6-amp breaker. If your current water heater keeps tripping the breaker, it might be time to talk to a plumber or electrician about upgrading your water heater's setup.

The standard copper wire gauge to use with any 30-amp circuit is a 10-gauge wire. The National Electric Code specifies a 10-gauge wire with appliances like water heaters running on 30 amps. If you try to use a smaller gauge wire, such as a 12 gauge, with a 30-amp breaker, you run the risk of the wire overheating and melting or causing a fire. Because of the safety hazards, the gauge of the wire is not an area to try to cut costs when connecting a 30-amp breaker to a water heater.

Every type of water heater has its advantages and disadvantages. Understanding those can help you decide the best type for your situation and budget.

Pros

  • Safer than gas or propane

  • Doesn’t require extensive venting systems

  • Lower upfront costs

  • Simpler to operate

  • No pilot light

  • Easier installation

  • More efficient heating than gas models

  • Available as point-of-use (POU) and whole-house units

Cons

  • Slower to heat water

  • Longer recovery time

  • Possibly higher operating costs

  • Doesn’t work during a power outage

  • Costs can increase without a 240-volt connection

In most municipalities, a license is not mandatory for water heater installation or replacement. However, we strongly recommend hiring a licensed plumber or water heater installer to handle the work. Licensed installers are far less likely to make a mistake during the installation, which means paying for the experience decreases your risk of a leak and other issues. You can use our state licensing tool to find out if a contractor you’re considering in your area holds a plumber’s license.
