"Tom and Autumn were prompt in their availability to give an estimate and then install our window films. They are true professionals with both the windows that had easy access, as in our kitchen, and the windows needing a tall ladder, as above our front door and fireplace. Tom even went above and beyond by handing my husband the globes from our entry chandelier for cleaning and then he put them back up (we do not have a 16-ft. ladder!). We enthusiastically recommend them AND the difference the ECOFilm is making in reducing UV glare and heat without blocking some natural light!"

Bay windows are not easy to install because they are heavy and require specific tools and woodworking experience. You’ll also need to install a roof cab, flashing, and shingles. Ensuring the window is level and sealed can be tricky but it is important because it prevents air leakage and water from entering your home. Most often, an experienced window pro should install bay windows.

Bay windows are supported by braces and industrial strength cables, often at the top of the window but sometimes at the bottom. The bay window may need buttress supports if installed on the second floor. Wood screws on the interior also hold the bay window in place. Bay windows are heavy and need proper support to prevent sagging and wall damage. You need to ensure that the support system can hold the weight of the window and the roof cab over the window.

The rough opening refers to the framed space in the wall where the window will be placed. That means the full size of the space will be filled with both glass and frame once the new window is installed. For a standard window, a rough opening adds 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch to both the length and width.

Casement window types differ from standard windows in that they have a hinge on the side or the top of the window so that it can open inwards or outwards. If your casement windows open upward, they usually have a crank to operate them. Casement windows with side hinges typically operate like a door, opening and closing without a crank.

To tell if a window is single or double-pane, focus on the edge. Double-pane windows have two glass layers separated by a spacer, which you can usually see around the edges. For single-pane windows, it’s just one sheet of glass. Another easy trick: shine a light at the window—single-pane glass reflects once, while double-pane glass reflects twice. Lastly, if you feel both sides of the glass on a cold day, double-paned windows will feel warmer because of the insulating gap between the panes.
