"Friday evening - no water! Late Friday evening - spoke with Garrett at Banks Well Pump Services LLC. Saturday morning - Garrett diagnosed the problem as a failed water pump. Monday - new water pump installed in 700 foot deep well. Not having running water in the house is never a good thing. I feel very fortunate to have connected with Garrett and getting the problem resolved this quickly. He's knowledgeable, he's careful, he does quality work and he's a pleasure to work with."

"Justin came within a half an hour of my phone call, and he worked the rest of the day taking out the old water heater and installing a brand new one. He demonstrated expert workmanship and excellent knowledge of all aspects of installing a gas water heater. It was a wonderful experience and I would definitely call this company if anyone needs emergency service with a leaking old water heater. :-)"

"Bryan from Roto-Rooter was awesome. He was sympathetic to our emergency issue (on Thanksgiving weekend no less!), and took the time to explain what he would be doing to identify and resolve our issue. He was thorough, professional, very helpful. Super nice guy and the price was reasonable considering the holiday, etc. Very pleased with the entire service."

"This company did an exceptional job from start to finish. On a Saturday I went on Home Advisor shortly after 7 am and had a call back 5 minutes later. Thankfully the company could have someone out that morning since I had no water. The tech arrived and found the problem, had the part to repair it immediately and I was able to have water again. This company did a fantastic job, I would highly recommend them."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Yes. To get soft water, you can install a water softening system, which will replace the calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium or potassium ions. Water softeners cost anywhere from $200 to $6,000, depending on the size and complexity of the system. You can either install a water softener for the whole house or just at your shower heads. If you’re sensitive to sodium or potassium, you can install a salt-free water conditioner.

You can decide whether you need a water softener or water filter based on how your bathing or laundry experience is. If you notice issues like limescale buildup, dry skin, or stains on dishes—all telltale signs of hard water—you'd likely benefit from a water softener. However, if your main concern is over chemicals or bacteria in your tap water filter, and not just comfort, a filter is a better option.

A water softener removes minerals from your drinking water and can make your house water softer. These softeners are designed to extend the lifetime of your plumbing system while also making water safer and more palatable for drinking. Hard water, which is water with a heavy amount of suspended particles, can also cause hair damage, skin irritation, and buildup in your pipes.

The primary difference between a water softener and a water filter lies in what they remove from the water. A water softener is designed to remove hard minerals like calcium and magnesium. In contrast, a water filter has a broader effect, removing various contaminants above a certain size, which can include bacteria and other impurities.

To decide which you need, consider your goal. If you want to eliminate hard minerals, choose a softener. If you want to remove a wide range of contaminants, a filter is the better option. Filters are also generally less expensive to install. Depending on your water supply, you may need to install both for comprehensive treatment.

To get utilities set up on a property, you first have to contact the local department of planning to determine whether your property is able to connect to public utilities. From there, you can work with a structural engineer and/or a building contractor to design the layout of utility lines on the property. The pros will need this information as they begin securing building permits before they can start adding lines.

If your property isn’t able to connect to public utilities, you’ll need to consider working with pros to develop a comfortable off-grid home that will meet your needs.
