"I am an existing customer. Late Sunday evening our septic tank went into alarm. Kyle from All About Plumbing was on site within the hour. He determined the alarm, which silenced before he arrived, was likely due to something getting stuck on the pump float. No repairs were required and there were no charges for the trip and trouble shooting. Thank you! I highly recommend All About Plumbing!"

"Richard was awesome! Very knowledgeable, professional, and most importantly- honest. He figured out the problem in less than one minute(the vents attached directly to the pipes). He laid out my options and we have a plan to resolve the problem. Someone else had come out 2 days ago and wanted $1175......and wanted to do work that would not have fixed the problem. Thank goodness for Richard. He is now my plumber of choice."

"Don promptly returned my call for service of my septic tank. I called on a Friday afternoon, and the work was performed on Tuesday morning. He charged a reasonable price and did a very professional job. His assistant Donald, was also very professional. The work took approximately half an hour and was done very efficiently.

Septic Tanks FAQs, answered by experts

Your septic tank naturally contains the beneficial bacteria it needs to function, so you typically don't need to add more. However, if you wish to replenish the bacteria, you can use natural methods. For example, you can add three overripe tomatoes to your garbage disposal or flush 1/4 ounce of active yeast down the toilet every three months. While store-bought septic enzymes and chemicals are available, many experts consider them unnecessary and potentially harmful. The most effective way to maintain a healthy bacteria population is to avoid using chemical drain cleaners, which can kill the good bacteria in your system.

Yes. A metal detector is one of the quickest and easiest ways to find your septic tank. However, metal detectors can be too expensive (costing upward of $300 in some cases), and not everyone has a metal detector just lying around. If that’s the case for you, you can also take a long metal rod and poke it into the ground at regular intervals until you hit something—likely your septic tank lid.

While dry wells can be effective for managing rainwater, they have several disadvantages. They can become clogged with sediment, especially after large storms, which reduces their effectiveness and can be difficult to clean. Dry wells are also not suitable for all soil types; they will not function properly in soil with low permeability. Additionally, if a dry well is not large enough to handle the amount of rainfall in your area, it can overflow. For gravity-flow models, the water may disperse very slowly, depending on the well's depth and the soil's permeability.

The bacteria already present in your septic system should be enough to break down solids in a properly maintained septic tank. However, if you’re in a DIY mood, you can try adding (well-mashed) rotten tomatoes to help the good bacteria fulfill their duty. Just make sure you give them a couple hours to work after flushing them down.

With so much available information about the ecological effects of cesspools (and their general unpleasantness), it begs the question: Are cesspools legal? In short, sort of. Large-capacity cesspools that serve more than 20 people are completely illegal countrywide. Existing, smaller cesspools are generally allowed as long as they’re not actively polluting. However, new cesspools are illegal to build in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, and many states offer programs to help homeowners with the costs of updating cesspools to modern septic systems.
