"Great experience! We needed a ton of work done to sell our rental property. From siding repair, to power washing, to hardware replacement, and of course painting. Everything was done on time and for the price quoted. Will definitely hire again!"

"We originally hired H&M to do an extensive amount of interior painting. They did a fantastic job. So we hired them to repair our cedar sided house and to paint the exterior. The work was amazing. The siding work is better than the original construction. The crew always did a great job of cleaning up. And the price is very fair. We will hire them again."

"I regret trusting the positive reviews. I suppose it depends on what subcontractor is sent. Only 1 junior resource showed up on day 1 and started painting. Brush strokes locked into paint everywhere. Cut in wall paint over ran line at ceiling into ceiling. Paint dripped into light switches. Day 1 is supposed to be all prep, nail pops not addressed before painting started! Day 2 senior resource joined him. Missed many nail pops and rushing to address them after painting had already started meant uneven lumps and dimples over shoddy nail pop repair, and repainting over that meant difference in sheen. When replacing deck screens used poor technique with power drill/screwdriver and stripped all the screws. Paint hand and fingerprints over the screens. They worked really hard but in effect were 1.5 resources for a large job and were rushing and making mistakes. Very polite but end product subpar."

"Totally professional! They offered great color and design advice and the work was top-notch in every way. We are thrilled with how our home and deck looks now. They also painted a couple of interior ceilings—also excellent. Plus, they got it all done in a short amount of time. And prices were better than other estimates. We will hire them again for sure."

"KK Custom Painting had been doing work for us for years. Theyâ  ve handled interior paint and drywall, exterior trim painting and repair and deck painting and stain. The work is always perfect. When the work is done the house is as neat as when they started. I trust them without any hesitation to work on my home."

Customers say: True professional

"Javier was extremely responsive. He contacted me within one business day, and we met to discuss my painting projects. I could tell right away that he was an experienced painter. He completed the jobs within 2 days—deck restoration, painting exterior shutters and the main entry door. I’m pleased with Javier’s work, although I’ll need to have him do touch-up on the deck steps. His prices were very competitive and I plan to hire him again soon."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

Choosing the right product involves understanding deck material, desired finish, and local weather conditions. Opt for high-quality, weatherproof formulations ensuring long-term durability and appearance retention.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.

Applying too much sealer to a deck might seem like extra protection, but it can cause more harm than good. Wood is a porous material with a limited capacity to absorb liquids. When you go overboard with sealer, the excess can't soak in and instead forms a film on the surface. This leftover layer is prone to peeling, cracking, and trapping moisture, ultimately defeating the purpose of sealing in the first place.
