On the casement windows, the installers only offered two options: Leave exposed wood that would require painting, or bridge across it with 5" wide aluminum trim that is not textured and would show any dents or imperfections. Thankfully, the cost was low enough that we were able to have a third party provide the finishing how we wanted it and stay within budget. Travis, the siding project manager, visited frequently during the work. He even ensured that there was plywood placed under the dumpster when it was set on the driveway to prevent scraping.
