"Ivan and John are great contractors. I called them while still living out of state for an estimate. They were quick to get that estimate done and check back with me. They knew my time constraints and worked with me on that and got it done when I needed it. They were considerate of our needs and pets when making the fence. They completed the fence in just a few days and it was no small task as the property is nearly half an acre. We were highly impressed with their work ethic. They showed up early and left late. I would not hesitate to hire them again or recommend them to others. You will not regret hiring Southern Contracting."

"We had looked for tree cutting services before, but the prices were outrageously high. Butcher Boys Land Care was more than reasonable. They cut a 60 foot oak tree by our barn down with expert precision. The wood was then cut and stacked. Good service with a good price. We will definitely use them again."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Hardscaping often requires preparation of the ground in the area where the feature is being installed. This can include digging, compacting, and leveling the soil, ensuring adequate drainage, and removing any existing plants. The extent of preparation needed will depend on the type and size of the hardscaping feature being installed.

We recommend removing the stump, and grinding is a popular way to do it. You can also dig out small stumps or stumps that have fully decayed instead of grinding them. However, don’t try using acids or fire for killing a tree stump, which is a fire hazard and illegal in many areas.

Leaving the stump alone invites eventual problems, including attracting termites, mold, and fungi.

Some two-in-one tools and machines do both jobs, and those could be the right solution for smaller residential projects. However, the phrase “use the right tool for the job” definitely applies to digging. For the best results, get two separate tools for your trenching and landscape edging projects or call a pro to take care of everything for you.

You should dig 3 to 6 inches deep for plastic edging. Dig as wide as you need to fit your plastic edging into it—2 inches is usually sufficient.

Chipmunks dig their burrows about three feet deep and up to 30 feet long. The entrances can be two inches wide or more. Chipmunks are fiercely protective of their burrows and use them to protect the nuts and seeds they gather for the long winters.
