You can try that, but it isn't likely to yield results. It's like watering potted plants without putting the seeds in. But if it’s mid-January in New England, for example, you’ll need to wait until the weather warms up again. If you want to keep grass green in winter, consider a grass like Kentucky bluegrass, which maintains its color year-round.

Turn the compost over every few days. This process, called aerating, allows oxygen to get in and accelerate decomposition.
