When your fireplace is not in use for longer periods of time, such as over the summer, you can keep smells at bay by spraying either a commercial fireplace deodorizing product or a blend of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water around the walls of the fireplace. 

Or, you can place a container of charcoal inside the fireplace to absorb odors. Just be sure to remove it before it’s time to start using the fireplace again.

Well-seasoned hardwoods like oak, maple, hickory, and ash are the cleanest woods to burn in a fireplace. When properly dried, these woods have low moisture content, allowing them to burn hotter and produce less smoke, which minimizes creosote buildup. Ensure the wood is seasoned for at least six months for optimal burning.

A fireplace is, by definition, an enclosed space where you burn wood or other fuel for the purpose of generating light and heat. A firepit burns wood and is much less expensive to build, but they aren’t technically a fireplace as it isn’t enclosed. An outdoor oven—commonly outdoor brick pizza ovens—often uses wood as fuel, but its primary purpose is to cook food, and you’d rarely just burn wood inside them for warmth or aesthetic reasons.

In short, yes, gas fireplaces create fewer pollutants and are considered more environmentally friendly than traditional ones. In general, natural gas fireplaces release only half to two-thirds as much CO2 per unit of heat (BTU) as burning wood. Plus, gas fireplaces emit fewer harmful particles and air pollutants. They can also be about three times as efficient as wood in terms of heating your home, resulting in a much higher level of their energy converting into heat.

While a hot fire can help heat up and loosen tar within your chimney, making it a recommended step before using a creosote log, it will not burn off significant existing buildup on its own. Attempting to remove built-up creosote with a hot fire is dangerous and can cause a chimney fire. For safe and effective removal of caked-on creosote, the best approach is to hire a professional chimney sweep.
