"Project: Sample-Taking for possible asbestos in my 1935-built home A fallen tree damaged my roof & attic and caused cracks in popcorn ceilings & walls. SMART readily submitted proof of employees' IDs and current KS asbestos training certifications, at my request. "Pony" took samples, following US Consumer Product Safety Commission's precautions for taking asbestos samples in a home (ex: wore shoe covers; used plastic drop cloths; changed gloves with each sample; used spray bottle to dampen area so as avoid possible release of asbestos fibers while sampling, etc..). This mattered a LOT to me. Cost was per sample taken, rather than an upfront site inspection fee PLUS the cost per sample, as other companies required. Also was willing to bill directly to my insurance company. Certified, competent, courteous, knowledgeable, flexible, prompt, personable, professional and sensitive to customer's health & safety concerns. Also, used a reputable NVLAP-accredited lab to test samples taken. Happy to say, All samples tested negative for asbestos; so I'm as pleased as punch. Review by Gloria J in Kansas City, KS. "UPDATE: Since the situation below happened, Veteran Construction took charge of the situation and explained that the situation does not reflect their business practice or company policy on engaging potential clients. Therefore, I have updated my rating to a C since it perhaps was a misunderstanding with the individual. However, I will still leave the review below since it did happen and I would hate for this to happen to anyone else. I truly hope that this was an isolated incident.

After the company?s response, I have updated my statement to show that this was a disagreement with one of their
employees rather than the company:
After every hail storm that we get in Central Indiana, we get a flood of Storm Chasers come through our subdivision giving us "free estimates" on any damages on our roof and vinyl siding. However, I had never had one of them call me a liar and a thief for not accepting their free inspection/estimate. One of the representatives from "Veteran Construction" stopped by, he mentioned that they were going to be working on our street and he would love to have someone drop by to give us a free inspection/estimate on any damages from the storm. I politely explained that we were all set and thanked him for stopping by. He then asked how come we didn?t need an estimate. I explained that our roof was brand new and I had done an inspections of the vinyl siding and I didn't think we needed any help at this time. He then said that he was going to leave me with "a million dollar question" and he pulled out a piece of paper from a huge stack of duplicates from his folder. The paper was a double-sided "million dollar" bill with Ronald Reagan on the front. When I flipped it, it basically asked me if I thought I was good enough to go to heaven and went on
to explain that lies (even white lies, fibs, or exaggeration) were considered lying. It went on to ask if I was a thief and followed up with an explanation of what it means to steal. Then it told me that I needed to repent or I could end up in prison for being a liar and a thief. Even worse for me, I would not go to heaven but rather h***. I can't believe that someone would think that this is the right way to do business. I had my roof changed 3 years ago and on my inspection of the siding I found a small hole on the vinyl that I can fix myself. Other representatives from different companies just left their business card and asked me to call them if I needed help, which I would gladly do. This individual insulted me, my religious beliefs, and my principles just because I declined an inspection. I hope this was an isolated incident and it won?t happen again. It is best to separate business with personal thoughts on certain individuals. As Veteran Construction explained, I hope that the appropriateness of the situation was discussed with the employee so they know the difference."

Asbestos Removal questions, answered by experts

If you think you’ve touched asbestos, do not put on a mask. This is important because you may take the asbestos fibers on your hands on trap them in the mask. Make your way to a sink and wash your hands thoroughly. Remove any clothes and seal them in a bag, then take a shower. Call your doctor and let them know you’ve been exposed to asbestos, and make sure you see them as soon as possible. The reason you keep the clothes is in case anyone wants to confirm the presence of asbestos.

Do not panic if you are exposed to asbestos. The illnesses associated with asbestos exposure are rare. If you are concerned about exposure, talk to your doctor, especially if you are having any respiratory symptoms, such as coughing or difficulty breathing. They may recommend imaging to get a view of the insides of your organs and determine if scarring or growths are present.

When asbestos damages the lungs it causes a condition called “asbestosis” which, unfortunately, can’t be cured once it’s damaged the lungs. This condition is chronic and any treatment is undertaken to improve quality of life. This usually involves quitting smoking, being prescribed oxygen, and undergoing lung rehab. Severe cases usually require a lung transplant.

No, an N95 mask will not protect against asbestos and many other hazardous materials, such as carbon monoxide, gas, chemical vapors, and other gases. You will need a respirator specifically designed to protect against asbestos. However, if you suspect asbestos is present in your home, hire an asbestos abatement professional immediately and avoid the area until they arrive for the inspection.

Asbestos has many beneficial properties, including fire resistance, strength, and chemical resistance. It is also an excellent insulator, which is why it was used in pipe insulation and other building materials for decades. For all its benefits, asbestos is dangerous for human health, which is why it was eventually banned from use in certain products.
