"I called Hosack on a Thursday morning because my water heater had died, and because of their great Angi reviews. They had a plumber, Kent, at my house before noon. Kent was fantastic ... great work, extremely knowledgeable, and VERY customer oriented. I'm extremely happy with Hosack's responsiveness, quality of work and attention to detail. Going forward, they (and I hope Kent!) are my plumbers of choice. I highly recommend!"

"I needed to replace my parents' 40 year old AC Condenser and coil, and replace it with something that worked with the new furnace my father got installed four years prior. They were able to do the work requested, and also offered to redo the furance installation as the previous company installed it right on the basement floor where any backup/water could possibly get into the system. They were very prompt and showed up on time/on schedule. They were very upfront about costs and pricing and there were no last-minute price changes or hidden fees, which I appreciate. Work was done well and they ensured that everything worked before leaving the job site. The gentlemen working were very professional and understanding. I highly recommend them for anyone looking to replace their HVAC or to correct work that was previously poorly done."

"Fantastic job installing my new water heater. The employees at Anton’s are efficient, professional and really likable people. They arrived on time and got the job done effortlessly. I also loved how they treated my home like it was their own by making sure nothing was damaged or ruined. They cleaned up everything and it didn’t even look like they had been here. I give Anton’s an A+ for the installation of my water heater."

"The plumber was very punctual and polite and did an excellent job. He made a couple of additional recommendations regarding our aging pipes and unsupported water heater overflow tank while he was here, but didn't push any services. He was also great when our giant, hyper dog got inquisitive and came over to say hi. The price was a little more than we were expecting, mostly because the awkward space he had to fit the sink into required some extra time and parts from his truck, but seemed to be in line with what we had seen while researching our plumbing options."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

The good news is that most home warranty plans cover hot water heaters, regardless of whether you have a tank or a tankless model. Your hot water heater should be covered by your home warranty because it's considered an essential home appliance.

You don’t have to replace expansion tanks at the same time as your hot water heater. You may be able to go six to 12 years or more before needing to replace your expansion tank. At $150 to $450, hot water heater expansion tanks are usually much more affordable than the cost of hot water tanks themselves, which average about $1,190.

We recommend you turn off the unit, the power, and the water supply as soon as you notice a leak. Your water heater tank should have a dedicated shut-off valve located on the cold inlet pipes. If the valve is broken or inoperable, use the shut-off valve to your home's main water supply to stop the flow to the entire house.

Avoid touching valves or pipes directly without confirming if they are hot. Wear gloves and other safety gear to keep from coming into contact with hot levers or components when turning off your leaking water heater.

If your system is not vented properly, you could experience what’s called backdrafting. Backdrafting is when your ventilation system isn’t working as it should, and instead of releasing gases outside, they get trapped inside your home.

Gas and propane water heaters create a few types of combustion gases, but the most dangerous is carbon monoxide. If there’s too much build-up of these gases inside your home, it can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

The size needed for your expansion tank is determined by the size of your home's water heater. Expansion tanks are available in 2-gallon and 4.5-gallon sizes. A 2-gallon tank will be appropriate for water heaters up to 50 gallons. An adequately sized tank should have a volume that equals 2% to 5% of the water volume within the system. A plumber can evaluate your home's water pressure, water heater size, and other factors to provide suggestions for picking out the best expansion tank.
