"This was a tough job with unfamiliar parts, but Buster and his son John performed the work excellently. They inspected old or unused chimney flues for use with Polypro flexible polyethylene pipe and aluminum pipe. Advised me on what parts to order and/or to inquire further about to the manufacturer. Met with HVAC company to discuss venting needs and to coordinate timing. Installed vents with persistence, ingenuity and some tearing into flue from inside house, with ultimate success. Installed new chimney caps and raised fireplace flue opening. Very pleasant to work with. They bring lots of experience to the job.

"Excellent job. Al quickly isolated the issue to a clogged pilot light and repaired. He was meticulous in cleaning, properly arranging the gas logs and leaving the fireplace looking like new. He also advised me on our other gas fireplace which was very much appreciated."

"We have Frontpoint at two houses. We had been looking for ways to cut our monthly expenses (Frontpoint is approx. $100 per month total), so I called them to find out what I could do. They informed me that I was under contract for another year, and that I cannot get out of the contract without an early termination fee that is equal to the cost of the service. I'm a little disappointed, because the upfront cost of the system was very expensive ($1,000+) for each house, so it seems odd that I would get sucked into this contract. Nevertheless, I forgot that I signed up for this with them. My calendar is marked for the day that my service ends, and I will be switching to a company that charges about half of what they do. They have OK customer service and are very responsive, but the wireless system had some issues with reception in my house due to a fireplace, and then they didn't want to work with me to get that resolved. They're OK, but I can't really recommend them."

"Shawn had to figure out how best to accomplish the not easy task of heating the basement. He did a lot of research, and gave me alternate bids, including heated tile floor, putting heat ducts across the ceiling and down the wall, or putting heat ducts in the ceiling; anyway, we had to have the ceiling torn out for lighting, too. We decided against the heated tile because not enough increase in temp for the money, and went with ducts across the ceiling and down the wall coming out near the floor to keep the heat down low where the people would be. Had to replace louvered doors with solid doors, stain to match paneling, put pine around the ducts on the wall and stain to match paneling, put in lighting and balance around fireplace, but before all that put in spray and fiberglass insulation, wallboard on the back of the unfinished utility parts of the basement, take off and rework the outside door, install weatherstripping. Finish by stripping and polishing existing vinyl tile floor. It is fab! Two weeks from start to finish and they were neat and left everything way neater and more organized than when they started. Kept me well informed. Went a little over budget, but part of that was extra electrical I asked for like grounding the outlets and installing a big fluorescent light for a sewing/craft area."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that chimneys and their associated elements like fireplaces, vents, or stoves should be cleaned at least once a year before the start of seasonal use. According to the Chimney Safety Institute of America, a chimney should be cleaned when there is 1/8 inch of soot buildup. If there’s more than that, creosote—a flammable byproduct of burning wood—can form and increase the risk of a chimney fire.

Hardwoods such as oak, maple, and hickory are the best types of wood to burn in a wood stove. These woods burn hotter and longer than softwoods, producing less creosote and fewer emissions. Hardwoods provide a more efficient and cleaner burn, which helps maintain better air quality and reduces the frequency of cleaning and maintenance required for your stove.

Single-pane windows might let in the cold, but if you’re not ready for a long-term solution or window replacement, there are quick fixes to keep your space warmer. Start by sealing gaps with weatherstripping or caulking around the frame to block drafts. For an extra barrier, apply window insulation film to the glass, trapping an air pocket between the film and the window. Thick curtains or thermal drapes can also help keep the chill at bay. And if you’re in a pinch and looking to get creative, bubble wrap can provide a surprisingly effective layer of insulation—just spritz the window with water and press it on, bubble side in.

Some of the reasons a chimney damper won't close properly include shoddy installation, age-related damage, or heavy snow or ice affecting a top-sealing type. Poor chimney maintenance and a buildup of rust, debris, or creosote can also cause dampers to jam. Annual inspections and chimney sweep costs are worth it to help you avoid a damper disaster.

To ensure your wood stove heats the whole house, measure the square footage of your home and choose a wood stove designed to heat that amount of space. More efficient wood stoves, such as those made of soapstone or those with catalytic combustors, can more easily heat larger spaces for less money.
