"I had callled several fireplace shops to repair my 17 year old gas direct vent fireplace. They both said they do not work on my "Superior" brand & refered the other firm I had already called. Mike responded to my E-mail inquire & came by my home on time he said he would be there. Mike took off his shoes & went right to work. He cleand all of the parts & the fireplace stared right up. He will be bringing a new replacement valve next week. His price was right. You could tell he had been to factory school to learn how to repair the fireplace. To my suprise he knew several other people I know. Jim G"

"My insurance denied my claim except for a minimal amount of work. Larry Evans from Artown Roofing worked with us to have it all repaired as he recommended a reinspection and the insurance company agreed with what Larry pointed out to them."

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

The main difference between an outdoor wood furnace versus an outdoor wood boiler is what each appliance is heating. An outdoor wood furnace burns wood to create heat, which warms the air and moves it through the ducts in your home. An outdoor wood boiler uses the heat from burning wood to warm water, which goes through pipes to radiators in the home.

The disadvantages of a wood-burning stove include a slow heating time and the effort required for fuel. It can take about an hour for a cold stove to produce noticeable heat. Additionally, homeowners must source their own fuel by buying or chopping firewood, cutting it to the appropriate size, and storing it in a dry place. The fire also requires regular attention, as you'll need to add more logs throughout the day.

Although no heating appliance can be entirely risk-free, a fireplace insert is considered a safer alternative to a traditional open fireplace, thanks to their enclosed design. With a sealed combustion chamber, a fireplace insert effectively reduces the risk of sparks and embers escaping into the room, minimizing the chance of an accidental fire.

Additionally, an insert comes equipped with various safety features, such as tempered glass doors that create a barrier between the flames and the surrounding space. This enhances both safety and energy efficiency by preventing heat loss. As an added bonus, many inserts are designed to meet strict safety standards that ensure proper ventilation and combustion.

You can close up a chimney instead of demolishing it. Homeowners often go this route because the cost of removing a chimney, especially a structurally important chimney, can be expensive.

Properly closing up a chimney involves closing and sealing the damper, installing a chimney cap damper, and sealing the fireplace opening with a door or bricks. The cost to seal and cap a chimney is around $500 to $650—significantly less than the average chimney removal cost.

Fireplace inserts have several potential disadvantages. The cost of the insert and its installation can be a significant investment, as the process can be complicated and expensive, particularly if modifications to the existing fireplace are necessary. Aesthetically, some people find that inserts lack the traditional look and authentic ambiance of an open, crackling fire. There are also ongoing costs for maintenance, cleaning, and fuel. Fuel type can be a limitation; for example, an insert may be unusable if you don't have access to its specific fuel source. Maintenance and repairs can also require specialized services, especially for gas or electric models. Finally, while an insert is more efficient than an open fireplace, it may not heat a home as evenly as a central HVAC system.
