"The installation went well. They responded quickly to me and were very communicative. I just think that it was a bit over priced. I paid it because I had no other option at the time"

"I bought two ProVia storm doors from Hoffman Weber, to be installed at a cost of just over $5000.00 for the pair. It’s an astronomical amount, but according to reviews, these were supposedly the best doors out there. I waited seven weeks for the doors to be delivered. My front door is acceptable as installed and works well, although the added “Art Glass” design looks pretty cheesy, as if I had added it to the pane of glass myself with a plastic paint pen, instead of having the decoration “professionally” applied. Hoffman Weber had no actual photos of the “art glass” decorations. I chose the design from line drawings only. On the other hand, the second door that I ordered is completely unacceptable, and I will be replacing it with a different door from a different company. The chief requirement for this door was that it be able to accommodate a pet door. I had lengthy discussions with the sales staff before agreeing to order the ProVia door, and I was assured that they could deliver what I needed. The first door delivered was a half-light door, although I was told that a custom ¾-light door would be sent with a pet door already installed. The door was sent back, seven weeks after it had been ordered. When Hoffman Weber contacted me with a new spec for reordering the door, I was told that ProVia could NOT provide what I asked for. At the time, I agreed to order a 3/4-light door without a pet door, and install an after market pet door myself. I waited another seven weeks for the replacement door to come in. However, when it arrived, it became apparent that this second door is completely unsuitable for installing a pet door. While it's called a 3/4 light door, it's actually more like a 7/8 light door, with the bottom panel being much too small to fit a pet door of any size. I asked before ordering this door what the dimensions of the bottom panel would be, stating that I’d need at least 16” of panel in which to put the pet door. I never received any response to my inquiry. The door was ordered in standard dimensions. It will not work for its intended purpose and will need to be replaced yet again. In addition, the window slide on the replacement door arrived broken, with a six inch strap of sharp, heavy metal protruding from the frame when the window was raised. After weeks of inquiries, ProVia eventually sent someone to fix the defect, but in the process of replacing the slide, made several cuts in the door frame. The door is back together and the window now slides up and down, but the structural integrity of the door has been compromised. The door also arrived with several nicks and scratches already present in the exterior paint, and with the wrong lock on the handleset. I communicated all this to my contact at Hoffman Weber, and have yet to have my concerns addressed. It has been nearly five months since I put in the original order, and I still do not have a back door that works for me. While I have paid off the balance of my contract, I am extremely unhappy with the service and the product that I have received."

"This was the second time I had worked with Bob's Construction, the other time was about 5 years ago when I had a new roof put on my townhouse. The first time they had to come back and do a couple of noticeable fixes on the shingles, but overall were kind, responsive, and quick to make things right. That's why I went with them a second time to roof my garage. Unfortunately the second time around may have just been the worst experience I have ever had with a business in my life. First I was told 5 to 6 weeks, which was very close to the closing of the sale of my home in 8 weeks, of which Bob's knew the timeline and the fact that it was contractually part of the sale of the home. They reassured me there would be no issues and they would get the work done before the closing. I was then called by Steve, a salesperson who worked for Bob's, who told me that if I brought 50 percent of the payment down that day, he could get the work done in 2 to 3 weeks time. His reasoning being that there was a lot of homes that they anticipated having to do storm damage repair on, that ended up not needing it, so it freed up space on their schedule. Of course I jumped at that, left work early, and brought a check to him before they closed that day. After 3 weeks of radio silence I called and was told that I wasn't on their schedule for the following week, so call back in a week. This happened twice, so by week 5, I emailed Steve again and was given the response "I will get it done by your closing". No timeframe, nothing scheduled, just that. The week before I closed on my house I had to call them again and was told they would be out on Tuesday. I cleared my driveway and garage out for them and no one showed. I called again and was told they couldn't get out until Thursday and guess what, no one showed. Then I was told they would guarantee it would be done Saturday and I even got a text from Steve around noon that said "They are just finishing up on a roof and are on their way over to do yours". I bet you can guess what happened next, nobody showed up. I tried multiple times to contact Steve, but he was up at his cabin with spotty cell service. Then randomly a van shows up on Monday to complete the work. A few other things to note that made the experience even worse: There was a wasp nest discovered in the garage and a Bob's Construction employee sprayed Raid all over both of our motorcycles and convertible. (We would have moved them all out had we known when they were going to come and do the work.) The same employee had greasy hands and left grease smears and handprints all over the fresh paint on the side of our garage. Bob's Construction was also asked to quote us on repairing any rot on the underside of the roof and were out 2 times to inspect it. They nailed new facia boards over the old rotted soffits and told us, sometimes those things are hard to see at first. We had to contact another company to fix their work and replace the soffits. I was also quoted $700 dollars more than a competitor to replace a window, when I specifically asked for the least expensive option. I did get an email from Dave Ryan, president of Bob's Construction who told me the reason there was so many delays was because of an excess of storm damage on homes they had to play catch up on, which is directly contradictory to what Steve had told me in the beginning of the process. He gave me a whole slew of excuses, that were different from everyone else's, which shouldn't surprise me that if the lies are starting at the top of the company, they find their way to the rest of it. The reason I wanted to get this out was to inform others of the poor business practices and customer service issues Bob's Construction has and hopefully prevent them from going through all the time and stress I did for subpar work."

Insulation questions, answered by experts

One of the clearest signs that your insulation isn’t working as well as it should be is a noticeable difference in temperature throughout your home. One room might feel icy while another is hot as Arizona—this indicates that some parts of your home are either retaining or losing heat more than others. Additionally, a sudden increase in your energy bills, evidence of pests or rodents, or evident water damage are other signals that warrant a thorough inspection of your insulation and potential replacement.

R-30 insulation is better for higher thermal resistance, but whether it’s "better" depends on the application. R-30 is much thicker and suited for areas like attics or floors in cold climates, where more insulation is required. R-13, on the other hand, is thinner and works well for 2x4 walls or milder climates where less insulation is sufficient. Choosing between R-13 and R-30 depends on the area being insulated and the climate. For example, R-30 provides more insulation but may not fit everywhere in your home.

The best way to reduce heat upstairs is to release it by opening a window. Hot air rises, and if you can create some airflow by opening a window upstairs and also one on a lower level, the hot air should be pushed out of the home. Remember that fans pointing out the window do a much better job of circulating air than fans pointing into the home.

Radiant barriers and insulation serve different purposes, so one is not inherently better than the other. Radiant barriers reflect radiant heat, helping keep spaces cool, especially in hot climates, while insulation slows heat transfer through conduction. For optimal energy efficiency, it’s best to use both together.

Radiant barriers can enhance the performance of insulation by preventing heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter. The choice between them depends on specific climate conditions and the building’s design requirements.

Pipes in your house can freeze after six hours or so if you lose power and temperatures are below freezing. You can prepare for potential power outages by winterizing your pipes with insulation. Also, whenever temperatures drop below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, turn your faucets on very low and leave them dripping until temperatures rise.
