"The one steel pipe left in our house started leaking all over our basement, so we called St. Paul Pipeworks to replace it with PVC. They came out and we found out that the location of the pipe was horrific, which is why it had never been replaced to begin with. It went from the basement up to the 2nd floor bathroom, and they had to rip into the kitchen and dining room wall and ceiling, as well as our basement bathroom wall ceiling, to replace it. The estimate was done quickly, and the crew that came out was very courteous and knowledgeable. We thought we wanted copper, but after explaining to us why PVC is better, cheaper, and easier, we went with PVC. They were great and cleaned up after themselves. I would highly recommend them!"

"First, this company has handled all of my heating needs/problems since 1986 when they replaced a 58 year old gravity furnace with a high efficiency forced air system. I was not always pleased with this first furnace, but the company techs always gave me good service and advice. I needed to replace this furnace due to a flooded basement that left the unit under water for 6 hours and it was 23 years old. I looked to Home Energy Center (HEC) because of the good service they had provided over the years, but it was their job to lose - I had some questions about the old furnace. I called to make an appointment for an estimate and Kevin came out on the date and time of my choosing (at that time as late as 7pm and Sat. available). Kevin knew about my old furnace and told me they had stopped installing that model a few years after my purchase - they had found something better (I believe mine was an early high efficiency model -92%), I was impressed that he didn't try to sidestep any of my criticisms and presented me with what I thought was a good heating plant. Kevin said it's normally a 2 week wait for the installation but they had a cancellation the following Monday (4 days) and if I opted for that date they would deduct $250. He already had my business so I thought this was a nice gesture. That Monday the 2 installers came at 7am sharp and got right on the job. They said it would take about 8 hours so when I came home at 330pm I was surprised to find they had finished up and left They did leave all the manuals and instructions for operation. HEC provides what they call a "happiness check" where a company rep makes a return visit to check out and familiarize the homeowner with the system. I called Joyce and set up this appointment for a week later and Steve arrived at the appointed time. He had a checklist of items to go through with me and answered all my questions. He again covered all the warranty information and said I would receive materials in the mail to apply for an energy rebate and the Federal Energy Tax Credit (2010 exp). I did get these documents as promised along with excellent instructions in dealing with them (thanks Joyce). Granted I have only had this furnace for 2 months but so far I have no complaints and the house is warm. I would certainly use HEC again and will for future service/maintenance calls."

"My furnace went out on a Sunday and Service Today made it there in a matter of a few hours. Steven has to come back with a part the next day and got it running great! I was away during the “polar vortex” and when I came home my house was warm and cozy!!!"

Solar Panels questions, answered by experts
  • Installing a new electrical meter box

  • Replacing your meter base

  • Replacing your service entrance cable

The cost to install or upgrade an electrical meter box ranges from $100 to $650, including $50 to $250 for the unit. The meter base passes the power from your electric company to your panel. The cost to replace a meter base is roughly $50 to $250.

Service entrance cables are electrical cables with multiple wires, bringing power from electrical companies to residential buildings. The cost to replace a service entrance cable ranges roughly from $1,000 to $1,500.

Rooftop solar panels supply energy to a single household, where a solar farm can power multiple homes at once with clean energy. Residential rooftop solar panels cost more per watt with a lower project total, and those panels only service the residence they are installed on (in most circumstances). With a solar farm, multiple households can buy into the project and share the overall cost.

Learn about common solar blockers in your area to determine how often you should wash solar panels and the best cleaning method:

  • Soot: If you have a fireplace, soot can disperse and accumulate on the solar panels.

  • Debris, dirt, and leaves: These natural elements require light cleaning. Being close to trees or living in a desert area can cause more of these to accumulate.

  • Pollen: Areas with a high pollen count require more frequent solar panel cleaning, and sticky plant material requires a deeper cleaning.

  • Bird droppings: Bird droppings are binding and more difficult to remove. Keep this in mind if you live near a lot of surrounding trees.

Installing solar panels is worth it if you’re frustrated with paying high utility bills, live in a sunny location, and qualify for tax credits and incentives. Most homeowners cut between $650 and $1,500 from their utility bills each year by installing solar panels. Over the course of your panel’s warranty, you could save anywhere from $16,300 to $37,500, though those in sunny areas with high energy costs could save more than $100,000.

A few disadvantages of installing solar panels on your roof include the high up-front costs and the potential for increased property taxes. Installing solar panels can increase the home’s value, which in turn can mean higher taxes. Depending on your area, you should check with your local tax offices for more information. Another potential pitfall is roof leaks from a poor installation, but this shouldn’t be an issue if you hire a reputable company.
