The main difference between limewash and paint is their chemical makeup and ingredients. Limewash is made from lime and water, which is more breathable than the ingredients in paint, which is made from a combination of plastic, acrylic, or latex. When you should repaint your house is largely up to you since it’s primarily a cosmetic update, but many people choose to repaint when they notice signs of fading, bubbling, or peeling paint. You might also want to repaint prior to selling your home to boost its resale value or if you want a new color.

It’s less expensive to paint shutters than to replace them. The average cost to repaint all of the shutters on a house is $350. That’s roughly half the cost of replacing shutters, which is around $720. Many variables go into these figures, of course. Installing new vinyl shutters, one of the cheapest materials, might save money compared to a couple of coats of expensive oil paint. Most of the time, though, painting saves money.

Consider skipping the primer if possible; it's only necessary if you need to cover something up, such as a stain or a porous surface, or if you want to switch from a dark color to a light one. If you have a steady hand and are a precise painter, you may want to consider skipping the painter’s tape. Instead, carry a damp rag with you as you paint to quickly wipe away any mistakes.

In some cases, you may be able to skip the primer and paint over old paint. If you’re painting over paint that’s in good condition and is a similar color and finish to the new paint, you probably don’t need to use primer. If the old paint is dark or uneven or the wall has stains or damage, you’ll want to apply primer before a new coat of paint.
