"Matt and his team did an exceptional job with our challenging interior paint job—the tongue and groove paneling (walls and ceiling) of our cabin's master bedroom, including a vaulted ceiling. We also asked them to apply a java gel stain to a high ceiling beam and the pitched ceiling of our master bathroom. We couldn't have been happier with the results. Absolute perfection. Matt is professional, timely, and a great communicator. We really appreciated the photos he sent when the project was finished. He had competitive pricing, also. We are so glad we invested in hiring this project out--in the past we've done nearly all interior paint jobs ourselves, but it would have taken us so much time, scaffolding rental, and we wouldn't have done nearly as good a job. We very highly recommend Northern Lakes Painting & Finishing!"

"We had our kitchen cabinets and all of the upstairs rooms painted, and the results were fantastic. They had great attention to detail and the cabinets have the finish I was looking for. The crew was professional, reliable, and kept everything clean throughout the project. Highly recommend for anyone looking for quality painting work!"

"Trinity painting did a great job. There were some challenges with the execution of the painting but what I like about a company is when they do the right thing and stand by their work. When someone says what can I do to make this right it means they truly care. Final product is excellent."

"There were three men to do the work. They prepped, painted, and cleaned up. Entire unit was done in 6 hours, one hour ahead of their proposed schedule for doing the work. Three colors were used. One color for bathroom and laundry room. The two other colors were used on alternate walls in the bedroom, living room, dining room, kitchen, and entry hallway. I bought the paint ahead of time. We painted over existing color. We did not change the color. One coat gave us adequate coverage for walls that were painted 10 years ago."

Painting questions, answered by experts

You can apply stain over peeling stain, but it’s not a good idea. Your old stain will get in the way of your new stain bonding to the wood, so you’re likely going to see the same issue again shortly after application. Your best option is to sand off the old stain and clean the surface thoroughly before applying new stain.

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

Wood stain is not flammable after it dries. The solvent in wood stain is what causes the liquid form to be highly flammable, but the stain drying process involves the solvents dissolving, which leaves behind a non-flammable product on your wood project. Wood stain is, however, flammable before you apply it, so you should always store partially full cans and used wood stain rags away from sources of heat and open flames.

When applying multiple coats, wait four to six hours for each coat to dry. Not waiting long enough can result in streaks, peeling, and uneven color. Plus, it will be more difficult to discern where the second coat has already been applied.

You should repaint your fence every 1 to 3 years, depending on the appearance of wear and tear. Weather and usage will factor into how often you should paint another coat on your fence. If you need to replace a few fence boards or posts, you may want to consider repainting the fence to help protect the rest of the fence as well as the new pieces against damage and deterioration from being exposed to the elements.
