"Lower Peninsula Sealcoating did a great job on my 2100 sq ft driveway. Communication was good as they kept me informed of the process and arrived at the agreed upon time. The job included repairing a pot hole as well as filling cracks and sealcoating. Throughout, they were efficient, professional and pleasant. The price was fair and representative of similar quotes from other companies. I will hire again them in future as the need arises."

"I requested a quote for a new driveway and sidewalk for an addition I was putting on my house. I also needed to do a retaining wall and re-do a brick paver patio. Steve provided a fair quote, was able to start the job about a week after I hired them, and completed it in three days. Looks fantastic. Highly recommend White Wolf."

"I hired American Asphalt for a project that included sealcoating, hot rubber crack filling, striping and several asphalt repairs on a commercial lot—and I’m extremely pleased with their work. What stood out most was their attention to detail and their communication. They explained each step of the process clearly, and there were no surprises. The entire job was completed on schedule, and the lot was left clean and ready to use. If you’re looking for high-quality asphalt work done by a team that knows what they’re doing, I highly recommend American Asphalt. I’ll definitely be using them again in the future."

"Brian was very nice, said he'd do the job mid April, called in March and said he could come that day due to a cancelation and we were thrilled. Took about 5 hours, and now we can use our driveway again. Very professional, fast, thorough and quality of work is very good. Would hire him again."

"Overall I'm pleased with the work. It turned out well, and the crew was in and out in a day. I had a tree removed, and there were no signs that a tree was there, clean up impressed me. I replaced the tree with a ten-foot Blue Spruce, and in my opinion, could have been better selected, or even placed differently to hide bare spots from incoming traffic, but I'm hopeful the pine comes into its own. Since I've only been in the home 11-months, I knew that taking care of an eyesore around the cable box in the yard next to the driveway needed attention too. The crew removed the railroad ties, leveled the area, and added arborvitaes and river rock, and it looks a thousand times better. I had used Design One on a project at my prior home where they removed a wood patio and replaced with pavers, and planted a row of arborvitaes and laid river rock. I believe that the result from said service added significant value since the home sold in four hours. Travis Perdue took care of the design, logistics making both experiences stress free. His attention to detail and knowledge is unsurpassed, and his professionalism from the cradle to the grave is outstanding. Come spring 2021; I'll have additional projects for Travis and the team at Design One. Note: The approximate cost of service includes both homes."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

The choice between asphalt and concrete depends on your priorities, budget, and climate.

Concrete is generally more durable, lasting up to 50 years with minimal upkeep, and offers more customization options like staining and stamping, which can add more to a home's value. However, it is more expensive upfront and can be prone to cracking in cold climates where water can freeze and expand.

Asphalt is typically cheaper and quicker to install and is easier to repair. It performs better in colder climates. However, it requires more maintenance, including regular resealing, has a shorter lifespan, and can get hot and sticky in intense sunlight.

Ultimately, if durability and long-term value are key, concrete is often the better choice. If upfront cost and performance in cold weather are more important, asphalt may be preferable.

Three inches is a great thickness for a residential asphalt driveway that sees minimal to moderate traffic from cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks. However, a thicker driveway can better withstand the weight of a heavier vehicle, such as a trailer or a recreational vehicle. If you drive a heavy vehicle on a thin driveway, you risk cracking and damaging it.

Gravel is one of the few driveway materials that can handle rain the second it’s installed. Unlike asphalt, which needs days to set, or concrete, which requires weeks to cure, gravel is ready as soon as it’s compacted. It’s naturally permeable, allowing water to drain straight through—with no risk of pooling or surface damage. Gravel driveways are one of the most affordable, at $1 to $3 per square foot, and can also last upward of 100 years.

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

Common alternatives to a gravel driveway include concrete, asphalt, brick, stone pavers, and permeable pavers. Concrete and asphalt are generally the most affordable options. However, concrete can be prone to cracking in cold climates, while asphalt may soften in areas with high heat and direct sun exposure. For enhanced curb appeal, brick, stone, and permeable pavers are popular choices, though their installation can be more expensive due to intricate designs. Stone pavers offer a natural look and are sometimes installed with gravel around them. Both permeable pavers and brick driveways provide excellent drainage, which helps prevent flooding and reduce water runoff.
