"Positive: Professionalism, Punctuality, Quality, Responsiveness, Value If you are removing trees, limbs or getting stumps ground, these are the guys to call from Traverse City to Pentwater/Hart. I live in Ludington and had 32 trees removed at my residential home, along with all stumps ground, and clean-up. Unbelievable experience from the start. Jesse the owner is an up and coming leader in this business with his knowledge and drive. His wife Danielle could not have been more cordial, quick on follow-up, and accurate with her appointments. Even through some staffing issues and equipment issues they never missed a beat and got the 5 day job done on time, and at budget. Foreman Sean Williamson was outstanding. His smarts and work ethic showed brightly. I watched him do a complicated job, all while teaching two different new hires. Seriously, I expect Roman Empire LLC to be booked as far as they want with the standard they are setting. Please pass this along and strongly consider them for your, or someone you know's tree service needs. As professional as it gets. Sincerely, Steve Erickson Ludington Michigan"

Arborists questions, answered by experts

Your local government is usually in charge of pruning trees on public property, and the power company is responsible for trees near power lines (even if they’re on your property). Whether or not they top these trees depends on their approach to pruning. You won’t be able to do much to control this, but you can contact them to find out more about their pruning process.

It will take you anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours per tree stump to grind and remove the stump from the ground. The larger the size, the longer it will take to remove the stump. Also, keep in mind that rocky soil may require local excavation services to loosen up large boulders before you can begin to remove the tree stump.

You can find pruning paints and sealants for trees, but you shouldn’t use them on a topped tree. Coatings like these often inhibit the tree’s healing process. An important exception is if there are dangerous fungi nearby that the tree is particularly vulnerable to, like oaks and oak wilt. Sealing cuts can help prevent fungi from taking root.

The felling notch you make before you make the final cut will determine which way the tree will fall. The cut will be in a wedge or triangle, and the tree will fall from the highest point of the triangle. You can use this, as well as the process described above, to estimate where a tree will fall.

Some fast-acting products can rot a tree stump in four to six weeks. Keep in mind, these products contain harsh chemicals that may prevent regrowth in the area. Other products, like fertilizer that contains lots of nitrogen, can enhance the process and rot a stump in about a year. (This is compared to the ten years it can take naturally for a stump to rot.)
