"I hired a company for mold testing. They came out quickly which is what I wanted and many companies were unwilling to do. I did not want a company to do testing and remediation. I wanted testing alone. I got my testing and then the hard sell to another company for self remediation. I dislike the scare tactics employed. The mold testing is the basis for their sales pitch to use another company to sell mold remediation products. I would not rely upon the company for any information interpreting the test results. I would find someone who is independent to tell you what the test results mean. Again, this is because your questions are filtered through a hard sales pitch."

"We recently used Pure Maintanence for mold testing in our basement. They were super responsive and respectful of our short timeline. We had a super small project and their methods of mold remediation didn't end up making sense for us but they worked with us to make that decision instead of pushing us for something we didn't need. Would recommend for larger projects or testing."

"Jim responded immediately after I submitted the request for an air quality test and was able to go to the house the same day to collect the sample. We got the results in a few days which was faster that I expected. He was very friendly, professional and courteous throughout and also sent videos at every step explaining what everything meant. Highly recommend!"

Mold Testing and Remediation questions, answered by experts

Begin with a comprehensive mold inspection of the basement and crawl spaces, as Lansing homes often face moisture from high groundwater. Check for elevated humidity, inspect foundation walls for staining, and assess attic ventilation. Evaluate your HVAC system for hidden mold and address any plumbing leaks. Air quality testing is recommended if your Lansing home has a history of flooding or recent water damage.

Helpful?

For small mold spots under 10 square feet, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and sealed goggles. Clean the area with detergent and water, ensuring it dries within 48 hours. In Lansing, use a dehumidifier during humid months and repair minor leaks promptly. If mold returns, spreads, or anyone in your home has respiratory issues, stop and consider a professional mold inspection.

Helpful?

If you see visible mold, experience persistent musty odors, or recently had water intrusion—especially in Lansing basements—schedule a mold inspection and air quality assessment. However, if you find active leaks, inadequate attic ventilation, or ice dam damage, address those repairs first. In Lansing’s older homes, resolving moisture sources is essential before starting mold remediation to prevent recurring issues.

Helpful?

For mold testing, use air sampling pumps, surface swab kits, and moisture meters to identify problem areas. When remediating, wear N95 respirators, disposable coveralls, nitrile gloves, and sealed goggles. Clean with HEPA vacuums and EPA-registered antimicrobial solutions. Dehumidifiers and air movers are essential for Lansing’s humid summers. Choose supplies rated for MI’s climate from local home improvement or restoration suppliers.

Helpful?

Be cautious of quotes that seem unusually low or lack clear details about the scope of work. In Lansing, avoid companies that skip a full mold inspection before quoting, or those that push both testing and remediation without explaining moisture control. Watch for vague contracts, high-pressure tactics, or promises of “total mold removal,” and always ask for local references familiar with Lansing’s climate challenges.
