Septic drain fields should be at least 10 feet from the property line, though exact requirements vary by location. Most deep wells can be expected to last somewhere between 30 and 50 years. This assumes that the well and all of its components are properly maintained on a regular basis. During this time, it is unlikely that modern deep wells will run dry over the course of their typical lifespan. That is one of the biggest benefits of digging a deeper well. 

You should never park or drive on top of a septic field. Vehicles can weigh upwards of two tons, and this weight can put a lot of pressure on the leach lines in the drain field. Too much pressure on your leach lines may cause them to warp, crack, or completely burst. This is an expensive and very avoidable problem.

To keep your septic tank healthy, be careful of what you flush and be conservative with water usage, as even flushing too much water down the drain can throw off the septic system’s delicate balance. Never flush anything but human waste and toilet paper down your toilet, and be sure to have the tank inspected and pumped every two to five years, depending on the size of your household and your water usage.

There are three layers of wastewater in a septic tank: scum (solid waste that floats to the top of the wastewater), liquid (the relatively clean liquid wastewater in between the two other layers), and sludge (solid waste that falls to the bottom of the wastewater). The buildup of sludge is one of the main reasons septic tanks need to be pumped. If the tank is more than 1/3 of the way full with a combination of sludge and scum, it’s time to call a pro for pumping.
