"I spoke with Dan (owner) at Dust Busters who was very professional & honest. He provided a quote, but then explained that it may be less expensive to replace the air duct run rather than replace due to environmental concerns. You can insulate an existing garage door. But while it’s a cost-effective option upfront, it may not perform as well as a garage door that comes with insulation. Closed-cell spray foam insulation itself serves as a vapor barrier (or vapor retarder). However, you may need to install a vapor barrier if you have open-cell spray foam insulation. Polyisocyanurate foam, or polyiso for short, has the highest R-value per square inch: 6.5 to 6.8. Polyiso is a rigid foam that comes with a reflective foil on both sides to serve as a radiant barrier. Given its high R-value, rigid foam is usually meant for foundations and basement walls.

Doubling the insulation in your home also doubles the R-value of said insulation. In other words, by adding more insulation, you can reduce the heat loss by half. Most homes benefit from increasing insulation. Older homes, in particular tend to have less insulation as is, so doubling your insulation could drastically reduce your energy bills, keep your home more comfortable, and take the strain off your HVAC system.

Whether you should remove old insulation before blowing in new insulation depends on your particular situation. Fiberglass insulation attracts insects and mold over time, so if it has been decades since your last insulation upgrade, consider removing the old materials before placing the new ones. However, most types resist mold, insects, and mildew, so once you get the go-ahead from your contractor that your space is free from all three, feel free to install the new insulation directly on top of the pre-existing materials.
