"Right on time, right on price, finished a major job beautifully. Saved our bacon! [First-timers should know that plastering ceilings is beautiful - Michael even dealt with many recessed lights. There is some dust involved, just pitch in because it gets everywhere. But its the most beautiful work and its half the cost of sheetrock.)"

"Bill prepped thoroughly prior to painting, patching nail holes in the walls so that the final coats of paint were smooth and unblemished. He is a perfectionist, even patching a hole in a closet door I feared I would have to replace. He stated the cost at each stage of the project when I decided to add on some spaces I hadn't originally planned to paint. He touched up baseboards that had been discolored by floor refinishing and pointed out where I might want to do some painting in the future. He was patient with my indecision about original wall colors and worked his schedule so that the final work was completed on time. I highly recommend him for your future projects."

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

You can skim coat plaster, but it’s better to repair the plaster itself. A skim coat is a thin coat of drywall joint compound spread over the surface of a wall. The result is a flat finish that looks pleasing, but part of the appeal of plaster is its imperfections and aesthetic. Skim coating is best when limited to drywall applications.

You can plaster over regular drywall, but it's essential to prepare the surface properly. Before plastering, the drywall should be clean, free of dust, and any loose or peeling paint should be removed. Applying a primer specifically designed for plastering can improve adhesion. Some professionals recommend applying a base coat of plaster or joint compound to create a better surface for the plaster to adhere to. Proper preparation ensures a smooth and durable plaster finish over regular drywall.

Repairs typically take 2-4 hours for small areas. Larger or more complex repairs may require additional time.

The allure of Venetian plaster lies in its unique appearance and individual characteristics in a home. It’s sophisticated and multidimensional and has a rich history dating back to Ancient Rome. This type of plaster finish is durable and represents a style of luxury that has been practiced for thousands of years. Many designers pair the texture of Venetian plaster with modern furnishings, resulting in an elegant and refined aesthetic.

The tool you use to sand plaster will depend on the size of the project. If you’re just working on a small section of your wall to get rid of an uneven spot on the surface, hand-sanding might work. However, for larger projects, a drywall sander can make a huge difference when it comes to both time and elbow grease—and an orbital sander can help for detailed areas such as around ceiling fans.
